PRINCETON (9/25/09) - The seventh-ranked Princeton field hockey team hosts Yale Saturday afternoon in the second Ivy League game of the season for both teams. The teams are among four 1-0 teams in the league after a week of play.
Princeton improved to 6-1 this season on Wednesday night with a 3-0 blanking of Penn State at Class of '52 Stadium. Freshman Michelle Cesan led the charge with a goal and an assist and sophomore Kathleen Sharkey and senior Kaitlyn Perrelle also added goals in the win. Junior goalkeeper Jennifer King stopped all five shots she faced to pick up her first shutout of the season and the seventh of her Princeton career. The win was Princeton's third straight over Penn State and the second straight to come by shutout. Penn State had won the previous eight meetings in the series.
The Tigers kicked off the 2009 Ivy League campaign last Saturday with a 6-1 win Dartmouth. All eight Ivy teams opened their league slates last Saturday and the four 1-0 teams play each other this weekend, meaning that there will only be two undefeated Ivy teams once the weekend is over. In addition to the Princeton-Yale game, Cornell hosts Columbia in a meeting of 1-0 teams. Princeton has won its last 11 Ivy League games.
Sharkey's goal against Penn State was her team-leading eighth goal and 21st point of the season. She is one of four Tigers in double-digits for points, joined by classmate Katie Reinprecht and freshmen Julia Reinprecht and Michelle Cesan. Cesan was the latest to reach the mark with a goal and an assist in the Penn State win. Both Reinprechts, Cesan and Perrelle have scored four goals this year.
Princeton and Yale will meet on Saturday for the 39th time. Yale and Harvard are Princeton's most common opponent as the Tigers have faced each 38 times. Princeton is 33-2-3 all-time against Yale and is 16-2-1 in the series at home. Princeton is also unbeaten in its last 31 games against Yale at 28-0-3. The Tigers have won 24 straight in the series, including a 6-1 win at Yale last season in which Katie Reinprecht scored four goals.
Yale is 2-4 overall and 1-0 in the Ivy League this season. The Bulldogs opened the season with a win over Sacred Heart, and then lost twice to Northwestern and Maine, before winning its last three games leading into this weekend. The streak started with a win over Colgate and included a 4-3 win in Yale's Ivy over Harvard. Yale topped Holy Cross last Sunday in its last game played. Ashley McCauley is Yale's leading scorer with seven goals and 14 points.
