Sharkey, Cesan Claim Ivy Field Hockey Weekly Honors
September 08, 2009 | Field Hockey
PRINCETON (9/8/09) -- Sophomore Kathleen Sharkey and freshman Michelle Cesan of the Princeton field hockey team were honored Tuesday as the Ivy League Player and Rookie of the Week after the Tigers opened the 2009 season with a pair of overtime wins over Ohio State and Syracuse.
Sharkey scored three goals over the weekend and was the only Tiger to net more than one goal in the team's wins. Trailing 3-1 entering the second half on Friday against Ohio State, Sharkey scored two goals in the first four minutes of the second half to draw the Tigers even. She then scored the overtime game winner less than three minutes into overtime to lift the Tigers to the win.
The following afternoon against Syracuse, Sharkey did not register a point, yet she influenced the goal that tied the game late in regulation and the game winner in overtime as both were scored off rebounds of shots that she took. Sharkey took 20 shots in the two games.
Cesan started both games and finished the weekend with a goal and an assist. Both came in the team's 3-2 win over third-ranked Syracuse as Cesan had an assist on Princeton's first goal and then scored late in regulation to force overtime. She had four shotsover the weekend.
Princeton, which entered the weekend ranked seventh, jumped up three spots to fourth in this week's Kookaburra/NFHCA Coaches Poll. The Tigers rank fourth behind three ACC teams: Maryland, North Carolina and Wake Forest. Sharkey, Cesan and the Tigers return to action on Saturday afternoon at 12 noon against William & Mary at Class of '52 Stadium in their home opener.
