One of the great Ivy League rivalries in any sport will resume this weekend as both the Harvard and Yale men's swimming and diving teams will travel south to take on Princeton at DeNunzio Pool. This meet will take place over two days; you can see which events will happen during both sessions in the schedule below.
While these teams will return to DeNunzio Pool the first weekend of March for the 2010 Ivy League Championships, there is always something special about HYP weekend, and this one should be no different. Each team has at least one swimmer who ranks atop the Ivy League in their respective events: examples include Princeton's Jonathan Christensen (100/200 breast), Harvard's Alexander Meyer (1000) and Yale's Goksu Bicer (49.61). Overall, in the 14 individual Ivy swimming events, eight of the best times belong to one of these three teams; Princeton leads the way with six.
Each of the three programs are also among the teams receiving votes in the Division I national poll, with Princeton only three spots outside of the Top 25. Not only are these among the premier teams of the present, but they have been consistently atop the Ivy League; over the last four decades, at least one of the three teams has won outright or shared the league crown.
Princeton is also looking to extend its impressive win streak at DeNunzio Pool, where the men's team has never lost a dual meet. Should the Tigers sweep both Harvard and Yale, they would improve to 6-0 on the season, with all six victories coming against Ivy League rivals. The Crimson is 6-1 on the season, with its only loss coming against the 19th-ranked Texas A&M Aggies. Yale is 3-4 on the season and is coming off a 152-142 loss against a talented Navy squad.
While this meet might not have much bearing on the Ivy championship meet, that doesn't take anything away from the drama and excitement always present for HYP.
