January 30, 2010 | Women's Basketball
PRINCETON, N.J. (1/29/10) - The Princeton women's basketball team had four players in double figures as the Tigers cruised to a 75-44 win over Brown on Friday, Jan. 29 at Jadwin Gym, after a 19-day hiatus for exams and semester break.
Junior Addie Micir led the way with 18 points on 6 for 9 shooting that included going 3 for 3 from long range. Sophomore Lauren Edwards was 4 for 6 from behind the arc to add 15 points and classmate Devona Allgood was 7 for 9, contributing 14 points. Sophomore Laura Johnson added 10 points.
Although the Bears held Princeton's leading scorer Niveen Rasheed without a point, the Tigers used their depth around the court as nine players scored two or more points. Princeton had 24 of its points come from the bench, with the highlight being senior Cheryl Stevens matching her career best with six consecutive points midway through the second.
"It's important in our first back-to-back weekend to get contributions from everyone, and we did just that," head coach Courtney Banghart said. "I feel bad for whomever we play after a 19-day break because our players were ready to play."
The Tigers jumped out to a 10-0 lead and continued to expand their lead throughout the first half. Midway through the period Princeton held a 23-5 lead and would head into the locker room with a 26-point edge, 43-17. The Tigers shot 54.8 percent from the field and thanks to the hot hands of Micir and Edwards, were 54.5 percent from behind the arc.
Princeton continued to hit its shots and took its largest lead of the game, 42 points, at 8:17 in the second half, after Steven's six-point run. Brown tried to muster a comeback, as the Bears went on a 15-4 run in the last six minutes of the game. Alas it was too little to late as the Tigers earned the 75-44 win in their second league match of the season.
Allgood and Micir each had six rebounds, while junior Krystall Hill had five rebounds. Freshman Lauren Polansky also picked up five boards, a career best and she also led the team with four assists and three steals. As a team, Princeton outrebounded Brown 42-33.
Princeton finished the game shooting 49.2 percent from the floor, 45 percent from long range and 66.7 percent from the free-throw line.
Lindsay Steele led the Bears offensively with nine points, while Sarah Delk and Natalie Bonds had six points apiece. Delk finished with a game-high eight rebounds and Bonds added six. Brown shot 28.8 percent from the floor, was 2 for 20 from behind the arc and was 8 for 8 from the line.
Brown drops to 4-13 overall and 1-2 in the Ivy League.
The Tigers improve to 14-2 overall and 2-0 in the Ivy League and will play Yale on Saturday, Jan. 30 at 6 p.m. The Bulldogs earned a 58-51 win over Penn at The Palestra this evening.
