October 13, 2010 | Men's Soccer
EASTON, Pa. (10/12/10) - The Princeton men's soccer team got goals from three different players as the Tigers posted a 3-0 shutout against Lafayette at Bourger Field on Tuesday, Oct. 12.
Princeton is now 7-3-1 on the season and has won the last six games scoring three goals in each game. The last time Princeton won six consecutive games was in 1989 when Bob Bradley was head coach. This is also just the fourth time in program history that the team has won six consecutive games scoring three or more goals in every game, most recently in when the 1977 team did so. The 1957 squad won a string of seven games and scored at least three goals in all seven games and the 1942 undefeated team also did it in seven games. Both teams were coached by Jimmy Reed who holds the Princeton men's soccer record for wins with 136.
Princeton was able to grab a 1-0 lead in the first half and did not allow a single shot on goal.
Senior defender Teddy Schneider tallied his first goal of the season to give Princeton the 1-0 lead in the 42nd minute. He and junior Colby Hahn had a give and go, and Schneider rifled the ball from the top corner of the 18-yard box and it sailed in on the near post.
The Princeton back four of Chris Benedict, Mark Linnville, Benjamin Burton and Schneider did a great job of clearing the majority of balls that made their way into the attacking third. Senior Sean Lynch didn't have to make a single save in the first half.
Freshman Patrick O'Neil collected his first career goal in the 53rd minute. He dribbled through his defenders and took a shot from the top of the box for the unassisted goal to push Princeton's lead to two.
Junior Brandon Busch sealed the win in the 87th minute with help from freshman Dylan Bowman. Bowman delivered a cross into the box and Busch blasted the straight shot into the back of the net.
Lafayette's first shot on goal didn't come until the 51st minute when goalkeeper Sean Lynch stopped a close range shot by Sam Feldbaum. Lynch made his second save in the 77th minute on a restart from 25 yards out that took a quick hop and he collected a header in the 88th minute.
Lynch finished the game with three saves, while Pianko stopped five and a Leopard defender picked up one save.
Princeton outshot Lafayette 18-10 and took three corners to Lafayette's two. Lafayette falls to 5-5-2 on the season.
Princeton resumes Ivy League play on Saturday, Oct. 18 when it travels to Columbia for a 7 p.m., game.
In other news the NCAA has released its first RPI rankings of the season. Princeton is 38th. Here are the rankings for the Ivy League opponents: Brown (12), Penn (34), Dartmouth (47), Harvard (86), Columbia (131), Cornell (156) and Yale (184). The Tigers' remaining non-conference opponent Colgate is 115th.
Princeton is ranked No. 37 in this week's Top Drawer Soccer poll and is receiving votes in the NSCAA national poll. With 23 votes, the Tigers are 30th in the nation. Regionally, Princeton is in a three-way tie with West Virginia and South Florida.
