Hanna Triple Leads Men's Swimming/Diving To Sweep Of Cornell, Penn
November 20, 2010 | Men's Swimming and Diving
Senior tri-captain Colin Hanna won three events to lead the Princeton men's swimming and diving team to an impressive sweep of Cornell and Penn in its 2010-11 Ivy League opener.
The Tigers swept the pair of dual meets, defeating Cornell 192-100 and Penn 233-67.
The meet opened Friday night with the 1- and 3-meter diving competitions. Sophomore Stevie Vines, who placed second in both championship finals at the Ivy League Championships last year, won the 1-meter competition with 304.65 points, while freshman Mark O'Connell placed fifth with 282.05 points.
Vines finished second to Cornell's Phillip Truong in the 3-meter event. Truong won with 314.70 points, while Vines took second with 310.75 points.
Princeton opened the swimming portion with a win in the 200 medley relay, as Kaspar Raigla, Jon Christensen, Michael Monovoukas and Geoff Faux won in a time of 1:32.74. The 'B' team of Charlie Wang, Daniel Hasler, Brett Lullo and Will Lawley finished fifth in 1:35.25.
Junior Colin Cordes held off Travis McNamara to win the 200 free in a time of 1:41.15. McNamara placed second overall in 1:42.05, while sophomore Andres Tung took fourth in 1:43.50.
Raigla placed second in a tight race in the 100 back, falling only to Cornell sophomore Jake Sangren (51.40). Raigla took second in 51.68, while freshman Adam Lebovitz took sixth in 53.34.
Christensen continued to prove why he is one of the premier swimmers in the league. One week after earning Princeton's only win at the UVA Fall Invitational, Christensen won a battle with Penn's Brendan McHugh to win the 100 breast in a time of 56.12. Christensen and McHugh have had memorable battles in Ivy League championship finals, and it is likely to happen again in 2011. Hasler took fifth in 59.84.
Lullo won the 200 fly in 1:53.49, while freshman Eric Materniak placed fourth in 1:55.97. Senior Geoff Faux followed with a third-place finish in the 50 free (21.46), while Monovoukas took fifth in 21.82.
Cordes picked up his second win by taking the 100 free in 46.44, while Tung ended up third in 46.99. Hanna also recorded a double, winning the 200 back in 1:52.91, more than a second ahead of Lebovitz, who finished second in 1:54.05.
Christensen defeated McHugh in the 200 breast, this time by nearly four seconds, with a winning time of 2:02.16. Materniak (2:07.98) and Hasler (2:10.25) finished 4-5 for a Princeton team that is already getting impressive contributions from its freshman class.
McNamara was the class of the 500, winning in 4:37.71, while senior tri-captain Patrick Biggs ended third in 4:44.22. The Tigers went 1-2-3-4 in the 100 fly, including a winning time of 51.08 for Wang and a second-place time of 51.23 for Monovoukas. Raigla (51.39) and Lullo (51.80) took third and fourth, respectively.
Hanna won his third event when he won the 200 IM in 1:53.18, while Hasler took third in 1:57.42. Materniak was right behind Hasler, finishing fourth in 1:57.52.
Princeton's 400 free 'A' squad of Cordes, Tung, Christensen and freshman Ian Rea won the meet finale in 3:06.28, beating a quartet of classmates; McNamara, Raigla, Lullo and sophomore Brian Barrett finished second in 3:11.15.
Princeton is now off for Thanksgiving week and will return to the water for the annual Big Al Open, a three-day meet that will take place during the first weekend of December.
