Men's Track and Field Wins Indoor Heps Title

HANOVER, N.H. (2/28/10) - The Princeton men's track and field team has won the 2010 Indoor Track and Field Heptagonal Championship. This is Princeton's first indoor title since 2007, knocking off two-time defending champion Cornell by 32 points.
Princeton finished the meet with 181 points to Cornell's 149. Dartmouth was third with 55 points, followed by Harvard 53, Columbia 52, Brown 38, Penn 33 and Yale 28.
Princeton concluded the meet with victories in the high jump, shot put, weight throw, pole vault, mile, 400, 500, 800, DMR, 4x800 and 4x400.
Senior Ian Fox was the champion in the pole vault, giving Princeton's the title in the event the last three years. Fox cleared 2.12 meters (6-11.50) to take top honors. Teammate Justin Frick was second, clearing 2.10 meters (6-10.75).
On the field junior Craig Pearce won the weight throw. Pearce entered the meet with the best mark in the league after competing in the weight throw just one time this year. Pearce threw to 18.92 meters (62-01.00).
Sophomore Trevor Van Ackeren won the mile clocking in at 4:08.70. Teammate Mark Amirault took third at 4:11.10 to give Princeton a total of 16 points.
Sophomore Austin Hollimon had a blistering time in the 400, at 47.42, NCAA provisional qualifying time, to win the event. Only Columbia's Erison Hurtault, an Olympian, had a faster time at Indoor Heps in the 400.
Freshman Peter Callahan was the champion in the 800 with a winning time of 1:52.18. Callahan held of Cornell's Nick Wade, who had the fastest time in the league, by 0:00.22 seconds.
Another Princeton freshman recorded a victory, this time in the 500. The Tigers went 1-2 in the event with freshman Russell Dinkins winning and junior Mike Eddy was second. Dinkins clocked in at 1:02.77 and Eddy at 1:02.95. The pair was the only runners to finish under 1:03, as the rest of the field was more than a second back. The 18 points the Tigers received in the 500 gave them a 32-point lead over Cornell after 11 events.
In the distance events, junior Kyle Soloff was second in the 1000 with a time of 2:26.18. The Tigers earned 13 points in the 5000 with sophomore Donn Cabral placing second at 14:22.05. Junior Rob Speare was fourth and sophomore Max Kaulbach was sixth with times of 14:28.85 and 14:32.92.
With just the relays remaining, Princeton could feel the team title coming and it didn't have to wait long. The Tigers finished second in the men's distance medley relay to give the team the championship. The team of Amirault, Dinkins, Matt Gonzalez and anchor Soloff clocked in at 9:54.97.
The Tigers didn't let up, winning the 4x800 and 4x400 relays.
Van Ackeren, Callahan, Jeff Carbonella and Michael Palmisano took first in the 4x800 at 7:37.98.
Wrapping up the meet was Hollimon, Eddy, Ricky Kearney and Sebastian Steffen taking home first-place in the 4x400 at 3:15.77.
Other Tigers that contributed to Princeton's team score included: Issac Serwanga in the triple jump, Adam Thayer in the 60-meter hurdles, Ivan Charbonneau in the 60-meter dash and Kearney in the 400.
