February 06, 2010 | Women's Basketball
PRINCETON, N.J. (2/5/10) - Sophomore Devona Allgood and freshman Niveen Rasheed both had double-doubles as the Princeton women's basketball team recorded a 73-54 win over Harvard on Friday, Feb. 5 at Jadwin Gym.
The win snapped a six-game winless skid in the series for the Tigers who push their current win streak to 11 games. Princeton improves to 16-2 overall and 4-0 in the Ivy League, while Harvard falls to 11-7 overall and 2-2 in the league.
The 19-point win is Princeton's largest margin of victory over the Crimson since an 88-67 win in February of 1986.
Rasheed led the team in rebounding with 15 and matched that in points. She added a game-high five assists and a steal. Allgood scored 10 points and pulled down 13 boards, while blocking four shots. Sophomore Lauren Edwards led the team in scoring with 19 points, helped by her 3 for 3 shooting from behind the arc. She added seven rebounds, four assists, two blocks and two steals. Junior Addie Micir chipped in 16 points, six rebounds, three assists and a steal.
"I was really pleased with the defensive effort of everyone on the floor," head coach Courtney Banghart said. "We were committed to the defensive end and I think that showed. What can you say about Niveen and Lauren's contributions? Offensively we presented a balanced attack and that helped us pull away for the win."
The Tigers held a team that averages 70 points a game to 54, and held the team to 28.4 percent shooting from the floor as the Crimson went 19 for 67. Princeton also won the rebound battle, 55-39. Princeton's 18 offensive boards led to 15 of the team's 73 points.
Christine Matera led the Crimson with 19 points, while Emma Markey had 14 and added a team-high nine rebounds and two blocks. Brogan Berry had 10 points and two assists. Victoria Lippert and Jackie Alemany helped out under the basket with eight and seven rebounds, respectively.
Harvard's Berry started the game with a basket to give her team the lead, and the Crimson quickly worked its way up to a 10-4 lead after back-to-back three's. Princeton started to find its offensive rhythm and seven minutes later the score stood at 16-16 after consecutive three-balls from Edwards. Two minutes later the score remained tied at 18 but Rasheed gave Princeton its first lead of the game with a behind the back lay-up at 7:02.
After an Alemany layup on the other end, the Tigers took control and went on a 12-0 run to make it 32-20 with 1:30 to play in the half. A three by Emma Golen ended the drought for Harvard with 59 seconds left, but Edwards ended the half on a high note as she put away a layup after missing two previous chances and getting both rebounds to give the Tigers a 34-23 halftime lead.
Micir started the second with a fast-break layup after picking up a feed from Rasheed and was fouled on the basket. She drained a three less than two minutes later to give Princeton at 16-point lead, 41-25.
The Crimson would battle to get their points, but could only get as close as 10, while the Tigers seemed to find a ceiling of a 16-point differential until the final minutes.
Sophomore Laura Johnson, who earned the start at point guard tonight, gave Princeton at 17-point edge when she drove down the lane with a layup to make it 67-50 with 4:11 to play. Each team followed going 2 for 2 from the line before freshman Kate Miller had a fast break basket at 1:39 to give the Tigers its largest lead of the game, 71-52.
Matera had a jumper on the next trip down the court, but Miller answered back with another fast break basket in the final minute to set the score at 73-54.
Tonight's game was televised on Verizon FiOS 1. The game will be aired on Thursday, Feb. 11 at 7:30 p.m.
Princeton will host Dartmouth on Saturday, Feb. 6 at 6 p.m. The Big Green earned a 51-37 win over Penn in Philadelphia this evening.
