Wrestling Opens Road Trip With Impressive 28-12 Win At BU
February 06, 2010 | Wrestling
A four-match win streak midway through, including pins from sophomore Daniel Kolodzik and junior Travis Erdman, led the Princeton wrestling team to an impressive 28-12 victory Friday night at Boston University. The win opens a four-match road trip that will include Ivy League matches at both Harvard (10 a.m.) and Brown (3 p.m.) Saturday.
It was Princeton's fifth win of the season and could have been even more lopsided, but the Tigers lost three matches by one point each. Still, Princeton won six matches overall and got bonus points in four of them, including a milestone victory by a talented freshman.
That milestone was earned by Garrett Frey, who opened the match with his 20th victory of the season, a 15-6 major decision over Ryan Dowd. Boston University followed with one-point wins over Zach Bintliff and Luis Ramos, but Kolodzik put a quick end to any Terrier momentum with a pin of Nestor Taffur in 4:16 at 149 pounds.
With his team now ahead 10-6, senior Danny Scotton made sure the Tigers took control of the match. He topped Matt Morgenstern 9-3 at 157, and sophomore Andy Lowy followed with a 6-4 win at 165 to open a 16-6 lead. Erdman pinned Andrew Swank in the first period to move the lead to 22-6, and a forfeit victory for Kurt Brendel at 184 put the match away for the road team.
BU's Brock Mantella topped Charles Fox 6-0 at 197, and teammate Carmen Rondash topped Princeton freshman Bobby Grogan 2-1 at heavyweight in the final match of the day.
Princeton will now focus its attention on earning its first Ivy League win since Feb. 7, 2003, when it heads to Harvard and Brown Saturday. The Crimson comes into the weekend with a 2-8 record, although it also has two starters who could win the NCAA title this season. Senior J.P. O'Connor is currently 20-0 and is the top-ranked wrestler at 157 pounds, while classmate Louis Caputo is 13-2 and ranked sixth at 184 pounds. Harvard has lost to a number of strong programs, including both Penn State and Oklahoma, and it recently lost 35-15 to Boston University.
Brown is 2-7 and has lost six straight matches, but the Bears had an impressive 18-17 win over Hofstra early in the season. Greg Einfrank has 15 wins for Brown at 125 and could have a tone-setting match with Frey to open the 3 p.m. dual.
