Baseball Team Edged in Series Opener at UNC Greensboro

GREENSBORO, N.C. (3/13/10) - The Princeton baseball team dropped the opening game of a three-game series at UNC Greensboro with a 3-2 loss to the Spartans. Princeton led the game 1-1 and tied the game at two in the eighth inning before UNCG scored the game-winning run in the bottom of the eighth inning.
Princeton had been held hitless by Spartan starter Blake Hassebrock into the fifth inning before John Mishu gave Princeton a 1-0 lead in the inning when he hit his first collegiate home run. The Spartans quickly evened the score in the bottom of the fifth inning when Drew Gehringer singled up the middle. UNCG loaded the bases in the inning, but Ryan Makis was able to get out of the inning with no more damage.
UNCG took a 2-1 lead two innings later in the seventh inning with an unearned run. Corey Overholtzer singled, stole second, went to third on a wild pitch and scored on an error.
Princeton evened the score in its next at bat. Matt Connor reached on an error and an infield single from Matt Bowman put runners on the corners. Connor then scored on Andrew Whitener's sacrifice fly.
The Spartans regained the lead in the next at-bat on a Chris Barker solo home run. Princeton challenged in the top of the ninth, putting two on with singles from Jon Broscious and Mishu, before UNCG was able to get the final out.
Dan Barnes pitched three and a third scoreless innings in the loss. Kevin Link allowed a run in 2.2 innings and Ryan Makis surrendered two runs over the final two innings, suffering the loss.
Princeton is now 0-5 on the season and will continue its series in Greensboro tomorrow afternoon.
