GREENSBORO, N.C. (3/18/10) - The Princeton baseball team picked up its second win of the 2010 season with a 5-3 win at North Carolina A&T on Thursday afternoon at War Memorial Stadium. Princeton built a 5-0 lead in the game, taking advantage of five hits, four Aggie errors and a strong pitching performance from Dan Barnes to pick up the win.
Princeton scored two runs in each of its first two at-bats. In the top of the first the Tigers took advantage of two walks to start the inning before Sam Mulroy singled in the first Princeton run. After a steal of third, Andrew Whitener scored the second Princeton run on a ground ball.
The Tigers added two more runs an inning later. Matt Connor struck out to begin the inning but reached base on a passed ball. A Tom Boggiano walk and Matt Bowman's sac bunt put runners on second and third. Another walk loaded the bases and the combination of a fielder's choice hit by Mulroy and an error allowed both Connor and Boggiano to score.
Princeton gained its fifth run in the fifth inning when Whitener reached on an error and scored on a Brian Berkowitz double. Berkowitz was the only Tiger to have two hits in the win, while Whitener scored a team-high two runs.
Meanwhile, Barnes was turning in a stellar outing on the mound. He scattered four hits through five shutout innings before the Aggies pushed across a run in the sixth inning. Barnes tossed a shutout seventh and pitched into the eighth before being relieved. He finished the game having allowed one earned run and eight hits in seven innings, while fanning six Aggie batters. Ryan Makis pitched a scoreless inning of relief and Matt Grabowski got the save.
Princeton is now 2-8 overall and begins a four-game series at Navy tomorrow afternoon. David Palms and Navy's Ben Nelson take the mound in the opening game.
