Women's Soccer Adds Four for Class of 2014
April 28, 2010 | Women's Soccer
PRINCETON -- Head coach Julie Shackford has announced a four-member Class of 2014 for the Princeton women's soccer program, which will be playing its third season in Roberts Stadium and has advanced to seven NCAA tournaments in the last 11 seasons.
Gabriella Guzman • 5-5 • M/D • Bridgewater-Raritan • Bridgewater, N.J.
Guzman was named the No. 8 recruit in New Jersey by Top Drawer Soccer and earned a place on the New Jersey Girls Soccer Association Top 20 North Region team. While helping Bridgewater-Raritan to an NJSIAA Group IV state final match during her career, Guzman has won several all-conference and all-area honors. On the club circuit, Guzman played for the PDA Fire team, winning three straight state cup and regional titles and three top-three national finishes.
"Since the moment i began the college-search process, Princeton University has always been my No. 1," Guzman said. "The combination of academics and soccer is what drew me to the school. Princeton is the best of both worlds. I was attracted to the campus and its location, which is only 45 minutes away from my home, and the education I will recieve is the next four years will be beyond compare. The team, coaches, and new stadium also drew me to the school instantly. I can't wait to be a part of the Princeton University community and soccer family."
Erika Hoglund • 5-7 • M/F • Palo Alto • Palo Alto, Calif.
Hoglund has been named team MVP for Palo Alto and has played club soccer for the DeAnza Force 91 Blue and Santa Clara Sporting 90. DeAnza, a two-time state cup winner, is ranked No. 1 in Northern California and was a finalist at the 2010 Las Vegas College Showcase. Her father, Tom Hoglund, graduated from Princeton in 1977.
"Princeton has always been the school of my dreams," Hoglund said. "The campus is unbelievably beautiful and I am so excited at the chance to switch coasts and experience the East Coast lifestyle. Being able to play soccer is a huge part of what made Princeton so appealing. There are few schools that can offer such a top-tier education along with a successful soccer program."
Kacie Kergides • 5-7 • D • Germantown Academy • Rockledge, Pa.
Kergides was a five-year starter at Germantown Academy, earning all-league, all-region and team MVP honors during her career. Kergides led Germantown in scoring this past fall, just as current Tiger freshman Jen Hoy did in 2008. Hoy will be just one of Kergides' teammates to play alongside her at Princeton, as Kergides and Guzman are on the PDA Fire club team, winning three regional titles and advancing to three national tournaments. Kergides was a member of the Eastern Pennsylvania ODP team for five years and an ODP Regional team member in 2007. With her club team in the state, Kergides was named by Top Drawer Soccer as the No. 6 recruit in New Jersey.
"I was drawn to Princeton's soccer program because of the welcoming team and coaches, and I wanted to get the best education possible," Kergides said. "The school and campus itself are amazing and for that to go along with the great soccer program just made it a perfect choice."
Samantha Wierzbicki • 5-4 • D • Wilson • Reading, Pa.
Wierzbicki won a district champion with Wilson in 2007 and advanced to the state semifinal in 2008. On the club level, Wierzbicki plays for the Hershey Attack, a 2005 national finalist, five-time state cup champion and a regional champion or finalist the past five years. On the ODP circuit, Wierzbicki was part of the Super-Y national team in 2008. Outside of soccer, Wierzbicki is an accomplished swimmer, reaching nine All-America times while gaining numerous state and school records.
"Princeton University was everything I was looking for in a college," Wierzbicki said. "The campus, the academics, the students, and especially the women's soccer program all seemed to fit perfectly with the high standards I set for myself. Being accepted to Princeton is a dream come true and I cannot wait to see the opportunities which present themselves throughout my four years here."
