Frick Advances to Finals; Steeplechase Postponed at NCAA East Regional

GREENSBORO, N.C. (5/27/10) - The Princeton track and field teams had equal success on day two of the NCAA East Regional at North Carolina A&T in Greensboro, N.C., as they did on opening day sending another to the NCAA Championships.
Senior Justin Frick was one of seven high jumpers to clear the top mark of 2.16 meters (7-1). He will move on the national final in Eugene, Ore.
Senior Eric Plummer just missed making the cut to the finals in the shot put. He threw to 17.37 meters (57-0) on his first attempt to place 20th with the top 16 advancing.
In the 800-meter run semifinals, freshman Russell Dinkins finished 17th overall and fifth in his heat with a time of 1:49.01.
On the women's side junior Emma Ruggiero was seven inches from reaching the finals of the hammer throw. She threw to 55.29 meters (181-4) placing 18th overall just two throwers out of contention. Classmate Thanithia Billings placed 29th in the event with a throw of 52.96 (173-9).
In the pole vault, freshman Tory Worthen cleared 3.75 meters (12-3.5) to finish tied for 21st.
The final two events of the night, the men's and women's steeplechases that were scheduled for 8:30 and 9:10 p.m., were postponed because of a thunderstorm. A make-up date/time has yet to be announced. Junior Ashley Higginson and freshman Mel Newbery will run in the women's steeplechase, with sophomore Donn Cabral and senior Elliot Welder running in the men's steeplechase.
Competing on the final day of the Regionals for the women's squad is sophomore Alex Banfich. Banfich will run the women's 5000-meter run at 8:45 p.m. Running in the men's 5000 at 8:05 p.m., will be juniors Mark Amirault and Kyle Soloff as well as Cabral. Sophomore Trevor Van Acakeren will run the in semifinals of the 1500 at 6:30 p.m., and junior George Abyad will throw the discus at 9:30 a.m.
