Men's Track & Field Looks to Make It Two In A Row as it Hosts Outdoor Heps This Weekend

2010 Ivy League Outdoor Heptagonal Championships
PRINCETON, N.J. (5/3/10) - Princeton's Weaver Stadium will serve as the site of the 2010 Ivy League Heptagonal Championships on May 8-9.
The Princeton men's track & field team is looking to make it two in a row after winning the indoor title in February. Cornell has won the last seven outdoor titles, during which time Princeton finished second five times. Princeton last took home the trophy in 2000.

The meet will get underway on Saturday at 10 a.m., with the men's hammer throw. The hammer throw facility is located on West Windsor Fields, the site of the cross country course. All other events will be held at Weaver Stadium, the first of which will be the beginning of the men's decathlon at 11 a.m.
SPRINTS
Princeton has a healthy contingent in the sprints, led by sophomore Austin Hollimon, freshman Russell Dinkins and junior Mike Eddy.
Hollimon has the top times in the league in both the 200 and 400 and should be a scorer in both events. He has a mark of 21.46 in the 200 and 46.80 in the 400. Hollimon is a three-time defending Ivy League champion in the 200, 400 (indoor) and 4x400. He was also the runner-up in the 400.
Princeton sports the top three times in the league in the 400. Besides the top-ranked time by Hollimon, Eddy and Dinkins have the second and third-best times. Eddy is a two-time individual champion and a three-time runner-up in the 400 and 500, while Dinkins is the reigning 500-meter champion. Eddy has the second-best time in the league in the 400 at 46.82 and Dinkins has the third best time in the 400 at 47.58. Dinkins is the Tigers' top runner in the 800 with a time of 1:49.88, ranking third in the league.
In the 100, sophomore Ivan Charbonneau ranks seventh in the league with a time of 10.88 and he was a scorer this past indoor season in the 60. In addition, the Tigers have freshman Sebastian Steffen who has the sixth best time in the 200, 21.74
MIDDLE DISTANCE
In addition to having the 500-meter champion Dinkins competing in the middle distance, the Tigers have the 800-meter champion Peter Callahan. The freshman has the seventh best time in the league in the 800 at 1:50.50 and the fourth-best time in the 1500 at 3:46.54.
Sophomore Trevor Van Ackeren has the top time for the Tigers in the 1500 at 3:45.29, the second-best time in the league. Van Ackeren won the mile during the indoor season and was third in the steeplechase last season. He currently sports the second-best time in the steeplechase in the league at 8:49.95. The only competitor with a better time is teammate Donn Cabral at 8:48.92.
A three-time individual scorer Kyle Soloff has top-10 times both the 1500 and 5000. Freshman Nathan Mathabane and senior Elliot Welder also have top-10 times in the 1500 and steeplechase, respectively. Soloff and Welder will also lend a hand to the Tigers' distance corps.
DISTANCE
Cabral will lead the Princeton in the long distance events. He has the best time in the league in the 5000 at 13:58.24. Cabral is a two-time runner-up in the 3000 and 5000 and has been a scorer on two other occasions. Junior Rob Speare leads the league in the 10,000 with a time of 29:32.57 running the event just one time this season out in California. He has also been a scorer in the 5000.
Junior Mark Amirault has the fifth best time in the league in the 5000 at 14:04.61 and finished third in the mile at the indoor championship.
HURDLES
Senior Tom Zozokos brings a wealth of Ivy League championship experience to the track. He has been a runner-up in the 400-meter hurdles twice and was a scorer as a freshman. Zozokos's time of 53.60 is the seventh-best time in the league.
A scorer in the 60-meter hurdles, junior Adam Thayer's time of 14.98 in the 110-meter hurdles ranks sixth in the league.
Freshman Richard Sheldon's time of 15.17 in the 110-meter hurdles ranks eighth in the league.
RELAYS
Princeton's 4x400 relay has the best time in the Ivy League at 3:11.30. The group won the 4x400 Heptagonal at the Penn Relays and has picked up victories at the last two Heps in addition to a second-place appearance in 2009. The 4x800 has competed just once this outdoor season, while the 4x100 sports a season-best time of 46.86 to sit third in the league.
JUMPS
Junior Dion Lehman is Princeton's best chance of winning in the jumps. He ranks fourth in the long jump at 7.27 meters. Lehman took third place in the event this past indoor season and was a scorer in 2008. Seniors Scott Henkelman and Duane Hynes also have top-10 marks in the long jump, as does sophomore Isaac Serwanga in the triple jump. Hynes was a scorer in the long jump in 2007 and 2008.
Princeton has the best 1-2 punch in the high jump than any other Ivy League school with juniors Justin Frick and Ian Fox. Frick has recorded a season-best mark of 2.18, while Fox reached 2.09. Fox won the high jump during the indoor season, and was a scorer four other times. Frick is a three-time Ivy League champion and a two-time runner-up.
The Tigers have four pole vaulters that will be looking to add points to the team total, led by sophomore David Slovenski. Slovenski is a two-time defending pole vault champion and reached 4.70 meters to rank eighth in the league. Senior Chad Faulkner has been a scorer in the pole vault six times. Derek and Duane Hynes also bring top-10 marks in the league, with Derek clearing 4.88 and Duane 4.70. Duane Hynes was the Outstanding Performer at the 2009 Indoor Heps.
THROWS
A four-time Ivy League champion in the shot put, senior Eric Plummer looks to pick up his fifth crown in the event. He currently has the second-best mark in the league at 17.14 meters and has been a runner-up in Heps twice. Junior George Abyad, senior Joel Karacozoff and sophomore Patrick Park also sport top-10 marks in the league in the shot put.
Abyad has a top-10 mark in the shot and discus. He is a three-time scorer in the shot with his best mark this season being 15.88 meters. Abyad has reached 51.26 meters this season in the discus to rank fifth in the league.
Karacozoff has top-10 marks in the league in the shot put, discus and hammer. He has been a scorer in the shot put and discus one time apiece. In the shot put he ranks 10th at 15.47, in the discus he is sixth at 50.64 and in the hammer he is seventh at 54.67.
Freshman Conor McCullough has the best mark in the league in the hammer throw with a mark of 67.93 meters. He also ranks ninth in the discus at 48.56. Junior Craig Pearce is another viable candidate in the hammer throw. He owns the second-best mark in the league at 61.80 meters. Pearce has been the runner-up in the hammer the past two years, and won the weight throw this past indoor season.
