Women's Track & Field Lead After Day 1 of Heps

PRINCETON, N.J. (4/8/10) - The Princeton women's track & field team is in the lead after day one of the 2010 Ivy League Outdoor Heptagonal Championships. The Tigers lead with 41.50 points with Brown right behind with 39 points and Cornell with 35.50. Penn has 15 points, Harvard and Columbia have 12 each and Yale has zero.
Princeton earned 17 points in the 10,000-meter run with junior Sarah Cummings taking first-place honors. This is Cumming's second time winning the 10,000-meter run. She finished the run in 35:03.79. Senior Alexa Glencer earned a third-place finish with a time of 35:57.48. Glencer took third-place last year as well. Senior Reilly Kiernan who is recovering from a foot injury was sixth to earn a point towards the team total with a time of 36:20.35.
Freshman Tory Worthen became a second-time Heps champion, winning the pole vault. She cleared 4.00 meters (13-01.50), her best mark of the outdoor season. Sophomore Lydia Arias reached 3.55 meters (11-07.75) to pick up half a point, as one of seven vaulters to clear that height.
Juniors Emma Ruggiero and Thanithia Billings went 2-3 in the hammer throw. Ruggiero threw a new personal best 58.83 meters (193-00) to take second. Her previous best was 57.71 meters set during the PYP meet. Billings also recorded a personal best with a throw of 54.62 meters (179-02) to take third. In all, the pair gave the Tigers 14 points in the event.
Four other Tigers qualified for Sunday's finals.
Sophomore Eileen Moran qualified in both the 100- and 200-meter dash and she posted personal bests in both preliminaries. She ran an 11.73 in the 100 and a 24.46 in the 200, the third best times in both events. Cornell's Melissa Hewitt and Columbia's Sharay Hale will battle Moran for the top spots, as they make up the first and second spots in the two races.
Junior Libby Bliss has qualified for the 800-meter dash final, freshman Alexia Mikaelian qualified for the 1500-meter run finals and junior Bianca Mathabane qualified for the 100-meter hurdles final.
Day 2 will begin tomorrow, Sunday, at 11 a.m., when the decathlon and heptathlon continues.
