Men's Track & Field Wins Two Events on Day 1 of Heps
May 09, 2010 | Men's Track and Field
PRINCETON, N.J. (5/8/10) - The Princeton men's track & field team is in second place, trailing by just two points to Cornell after day one of the 2010 Ivy League Outdoor Heptagonal Championships. Cornell had 35 points followed by Princeton's 33. Dartmouth follows with 28, Harvard with 22, Brown with 19, Yale with 10 and Penn with eight.
Freshman Conor McCullough started the meet out with a bang winning the very first even, the hammer throw and breaking a 23-year record. McCullough threw the hammer to 70.37 meters (230-10), beating the record of 68.32 set by Jim Driscoll of Yale in 1987. Senior Craig Pearce took second place with a throw of 60.76 meters (199-04).
Sophomore Donn Cabral earned Princeton's second victory of the day, winning the 10,000-meter run at 29:51.71. He was just one of two runners to click in in under 30 minutes. The win came as a surprise to some of the fans in the Weaver Stadium stands as Cabral has not run the 10,000 this season prior to today, which in turn didn't include him in the top 10 in the league.
Sophomore Derek Hynes placed sixth in the pole vault at 4.80 meters (15-09.00) to gain Princeton a point in the team scoring.
Brother and senior Duane Hynes took fourth in the long jump, reaching 7.26 meters (23-10.00) for four points. He is also in third place halfway through the decathlon with 3531 points.
Seven other Tigers qualified for Sunday's finals.
Sophomore Ivan Charbonneau qualified for the finals of the 100-meter dash after clocking in at 10.98 in the preliminaries. It was his second-best time of the season.
Sophomore Austin Hollimon will run in the finals of both the 200- and 400-meter dashes. During the preliminaries, Hollimon ran a 21.32 in the 200 and 47.43 in the 400.
Freshman Sebastian Steffen will also run in the 200-meter final after recording a time of 21.36 in prelims.
Junior Mike Eddy had the best time in the prelims of the 400 at 47.36 to join Hollimon in the 400 finals.
Junior Adam Thayer will compete in the 110-meter hurdles finals.
Junior Mark Amirault posted the best time in the 1500-meter run prelims at 3:52.04. Classmate Kyle Soloff also qualified at 3:54.71.
Day 2 will begin tomorrow at 11 a.m., when the decathlon and heptathlon continues.
