Pair of Long Island Foes Ahead for Women's Soccer
September 16, 2010 | Women's Soccer
PRINCETON -- Riding a three-game winning streak, the Princeton women's soccer team will have strong opposition once again, welcoming Long Island University to Myslik Field at Roberts Stadium for a 5 p.m. game Friday before traveling to Hofstra for a 1 p.m. game Sunday.

The Tigers enter the weekend on a run of offense not seen in three years, as the 10 goals Princeton has scored in the last three games are its most in a three-game span since 2007. Princeton's three-game winning streak is its longest since 2008.
But coming to Roberts Stadium will be a Long Island team also enjoying a run of success as the Blackbirds are unbeaten in their last four games. Both teams' leading scorers also contributed to their clubs' last wins, with Princeton's Jen Hoy getting a hat trick in the Tigers' 6-3 win over James Madison last Sunday, and Long Island's Ariana Calderon scoring a goal in her team's 2-1 win over Fordham on the same day. Hoy and Calderon are each one of six players on their teams who have scored this season, with neither team having a runaway leader in goals as of yet. Calderon leads LIU with three goals, and Hoy paces the Tigers with four. Princeton's Caitlin Blosser is also on a tear as of late, getting nine points (2G, 5A) in the last three games to earn national honors from two soccer Web sites this week.
The Tigers and the Blackbirds have also used two different goalkeepers in the early going, with LIU's two keepers -- Jessica Sexton and Jennifer Bannon -- splitting time in two of the last three games. Princeton sophomore Kristin Watson has played the last two full games after entering for the second half of the Seton Hall contest on Sept. 5.
In another similarity, the Tigers and the Blackbirds have three common opponents this season -- Harvard, Hartford and Columbia -- but only Hartford has faced both LIU and Princeton as of yet, and the Hawks came up on the short end both times. Neither team has faced Columbia yet, while the Blackbirds tied Harvard 2-2 on Sept. 3.
It will be Princeton's first meeting with Long Island, which is Princeton's only first-time opponent this season.
Hofstra, Princeton's Sunday opponent, will face two Ivies this weekend after taking on Columbia Friday night. Just like Princeton and Long Island, the Pride are enjoying a run of success, having won four in a row with 13 goals in those four games. Hofstra has also had six goal scorers on the season, with senior Salma Tarik leading the crew with five. Tarik had three of Hofstra's six goals on a successful trip to the Hoosier State that saw the Pride sweep Indiana and Purdue each by 3-1 scores.
In net, the Pride join the Tigers and the Blackbirds in giving two goaltenders a look this season, though senior Krista Thorn has played the last game and a half.
Though Princeton rolled Hofstra 4-0 back in 2006 in a Penn-hosted tournament, the Tigers have had trouble with the Pride during the current series that began in 2008. Hofstra has won both meetings, by a 1-0 score in Hempstead in 2008 and 2-1 last year in Princeton.
