St. John's Sweeps Princeton To Open Penn State Classic
September 17, 2010 | Women's Volleyball
Despite pushing St. John's for the final two sets, the Princeton women's volleyball team fell 3-0 to the Red Storm in the first match of the Penn State Classic Friday night in University Park. The Tigers, who will take on NCAA champion Penn State and George Washington Saturday, were led by Lydia Rudnick and Michaela Venuti against the talented St. John's squad.
Rudnick, Princeton's top hitter on the season, recorded a team-best 13 kills and added six digs for the Tigers, who fell to 4-4 with the 25-17, 26-24, 25-20 loss. Venuti, who has rotated with Molly Bagshaw at setter this season, led the team with 20 digs, while senior co-captain C.C. Lobben added a team-high 13 digs.
Junior Cathryn Quinn had six kills with only one error, while freshman Leah Jordan had four kills and one error. Quinn led the team with four blocks, while fellow junior Hillary Ford added eight digs.
While St. John's took early control of the opening set, the rest of the match was far more even. There were five tie scores and three lead changes in the tight second set, while there were four more ties in the third. St. John's, which had 11 wins coming into the weekend, relied on its experience to pull through and earn the sweep.
Princeton will take on Penn State Saturday at 10 a.m., and will conclude its weekend by taking on George Washington at 4 p.m.
