Sophomore Jennifer Palmquist continued the strong start to her 2010 season by being named to the all-tournament team at the Penn State Classic. Despite her efforts, the Princeton women's volleyball team left the four-team tournament winless, including a defeat at the hands of the three-time NCAA champion.
Princeton, which fell to St. John's in Friday's tournament opener, took on the second-ranked Nittany Lions in a Saturday morning showdown at Rec Hall. Penn State showed its championship form, winning 25-8, 25-8, 25-13 to stay unbeaten for the weekend. The Princeton offense was no match for the taller, athletic defense; the Tigers hit -.048 in the match and was held to fewer than 20 kills for the match. Palmquist led all Tigers with five kills, while junior Michaela Venuti had 10 assists and five digs.
Sophomore Lydia Rudnick and senior CC Lobben shared the team lead in digs with six, while Rudnick also recorded Princeton's lone service ace of the match.
The George Washington match wouldn't provide much relief, as the Colonials came away with a 25-17, 25-17, 25-15 victory. Palmquist recorded team highs in kills (nine), blocks (five) and attack percentage (.231), while junior middle Cathryn Quinn added seven kills and four blocks. Venuti recorded 19 assists, while junior Hillary Ford added 16 digs.
Princeton was down early in the first set, but a surge led by Quinn got the Tigers back in the match. Down 15-10, the Tigers got a service error and consecutive kills from Quinn to get within two points, and Quinn and Palmquist followed with a block. George Washington never allowed Princeton to get a tie and pulled away late for the win.
A 6-0 Princeton run early in the second, which was aided by three blocks — each including freshman Leah Jordan, gave the Tigers early momentum, but George Washington was too strong at the end and came away with its ninth win of the season.
Princeton will make its home debut Wednesday night at 7 p.m. against Temple.
