Women's Basketball Back From Break with a Win Over Brown, 70-48

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (1/28/11) - Junior Devona Allgood recorded a double-double and senior Addie Micir scored 18 as the Princeton women's basketball team posted a 70-48 win over Brown on Friday, Jan. 28 at the Pizzitola Sports Center.
The game was the Tigers' first in 24 days, due to exams and semester break. Princeton improves to 13-3 overall and 2-0 in the Ivy League.
"Any time you win in this league it's a good win, particularly when you win on the road," head coach Courtney Banghart said. "I was really pleased that we were able to get contributions from everyone. We will need everyone in this together the rest of the way, night after night."
Micir hit a three on Princeton's first possession as the Tigers held control of the game from the opening tip. However it would be the long ball that would give Brown a 12-11 lead at 13:42. All 12 points came off of three-point baskets from Lindsay Steele, Hannah Passafuime and two from Lindsay Nickel.
Junior Lauren Edwards and Micir would hit back-to-back baskets from behind the arc to put the Tigers back out ahead, 17-12 midway through the first half. After a layup from Sheila Dixon, Princeton would go on a 9-0 run to take a double-digit lead, 26-14.
Nickel would collect her third three-point basket of the game, as the teams would trade baskets for the final 5:30 of the half.
Edwards would drain another three at the buzzer to give Princeton a 35-22 lead at halftime.
Both teams would have six made threes at the half, with the Tigers shooting 6-for-11 and Brown 6-for-14 from behind the arc.
The Tigers grabbed a 24-point lead, 48-24, with a 13-2 run to start the second half. Micir would hit two more three's and Kate Miller added four points in the stretch.
It would take 10 minutes for Princeton to regain that 24-point lead as Brown responded with an 11-1 run holding Princeton scoreless from the field for 6:41 to make it an 14-point game, 49-35 at 8:29.
Allgood would end Princeton's cold stretch with a layup and one at 8:06, 52-35. The Tigers would take back that 24-point lead on a 9-2 spurt, led by Edwards' five points, making it a 61-37 game at 4:33.
Brown would get as close as 17, 65-48, with 49 seconds left before freshman Alex Rodgers closed out the game with five points.
Micir would match her career best for three's in a game with six, a mark she has reached in six games in her career. Allgood's double-double was her first since Princeton defeated USC in late November, as she scored 10 points and had 11 rebounds. She would also pick up a career-high six blocks. Edwards was also in double digits in scoring with 13 points. Sophomore Meg Bowen was second on the team in rebounds with six, and she also scored six. Junior Laura Johnson led the team in assists with four.
Princeton shot 43.3 percent (26-60) overall, 47.6 percent (10-21) from behind the arc and was 57.1 percent (8-14) from the stripe.
Nickel would score 11 points to lead the Bears in scoring. Aileen Daniels and Passafuime had seven each, while Dixon added six and a team-high four steals. Daniels and Passafuime had five rebounds apiece. Brown shot 29.5 percent (18-61) overall, 30 percent from long range (6-20) and went 6-for-9 from the line. Brown falls to 4-13 overall and 0-3 in the league.
Princeton will face Yale tomorrow at 7 p.m. Yale defeated Penn 53-44 in New Haven this evening.
