Women's Track & Field Takes 2nd at New York Road Runners

NEW YORK (1/29/11) - The Princeton women's track & field team took second at the New York Road Runners Saturday Night at The Armory II meet on Saturday, Jan. 29. The team scored 149 points, behind Cornell's 159.5 points and ahead of Villanova's 134. A total of 10 teams competed in the annual event.
Senior Thanithia Billings won both the shot put and the weight throw. She reached 14.47 in the shot put and 17.27 in the weight throw. Junior Isabell von Loga placed fourth in the shot put with a throw of 13.50 meters. Senior Emma Ruggiero was second in the weight throw with a toss of 17.17 meters. She and Billings were the only two throwers to throw to over 17 meters in the weight throw.Princeton earned 21 points in the pole vault. Freshman Samantha Anderson and sophomore Tory Worthen tied for second place as both cleared 3.70 meters. Sophomore Lauren Tauscher was fifth at 3.55 meters, while juniors Bianca Reo and Lydia Arias tied for sixth with a mark of 3.40.
Freshman Imani Oliver took fourth place in the triple jump, leaping to 11.65 meters.
Junior Eileen Moran won the 400-meter dash with a time of 56.63. Classmate Danielle Glaeser was fifth at 57.56 and sophomore Joie Hand was eighth at 58.57, to give the Tigers 15 points in the event.
In the next event freshman Carrie Vuong ran the 500 in 1:18.88 to earn her team five points with a fourth-place finish.
Also earning points for the Tigers were sophomore Abidemi Adenikinju and Erin Guty in the 200, as both finished in a time of 25.33.
Ten more points came in the 800 as freshman Kristin Smoot captured a third-place finish in the event. Smoot crossed the line at 2:11.64. She was followed by sophomore Melissa Zajdel in sixth place with a time of 2:12.34, and freshman Molly Higgins in eighth at 2:13.97.
Sophomores Alexis Mikaelian and Mel Newbery earned 10 points in the mile. Mikaelian was third at 4:47.76, while Newbery ran it in 4:50.93.
Sixteen points came in the 3k, as Princeton finished 2-4-6. Senior Ashley Higginson was second at 9:14.47, while junior Alex Banfich was fourth at 9:27.60 and senior Sarah Cummings sixth at 9:37.02.
Junior Bernie DaCosta placed fifth in the 1,000 with a time of 3:00.41.
In the 60-meter hurdles, seniors Bianca Mathabane and Lauren Barber finished sixth and seventh, respectively at 9.01 and 9.02.
Both relays placed second. The 4x4 of Glaeser, Hand, Zajdel and Moran finished in 3:48.23, just one second behind Villanova. In the 4x8 Higgins, Mikaelian, Newbery and Kacie O'Neil ran a 9:08.63.
The Tigers return to The Armory next weekend when they compete in the New Balance Collegiate Invitational, and at the Penn State Open.
