PRINCETON (10/14/11) - The Princeton field hockey team resumes the Ivy League schedule this weekend and then faces a top-five opponent as the Tigers head out on the road for the first time in three weeks. Princeton will visit Brown on Saturday and then head to fourth-ranked Connecticut on Sunday.
The Tigers are now 5-6 overall and 2-1 in the Ivy League splitting last weekend's non-league games at home against Virginia and Wake Forest. Both games were decided by a single goal as Princeton edged the Cavaliers 2-1 last Friday night in a rematch of the 2010 NCAA quarterfinal game between the teams. Two days later Wake Forest 3-2 edged the Tigers in overtime.
Allison Evans led all Tigers with two goals over the weekend, while Kelsey Byrne netted the game winner on Friday and Sydney Kirby scored in the Wake Forest game. Both Evans and Kirby each have six goals this season to lead the team.
Princeton resumes its pursuit of an Ivy League title this Saturday at Brown. Princeton, Harvard, Yale and Columbia are all 2-1 in league play and are tied for second in the league standings, a game behind 3-0 Dartmouth. Penn visits Columbia tonight, while tomorrow's games feature Dartmouth at Yale and Harvard visiting Cornell.
Brown is currently 3-8 overall and 0-3 in the Ivy League, but enters the weekend having won its last two games. The Bears defeated Quinnipiac and Fairfield in the past week and a half, and had an early season win over UC Davis. Brown's three league losses have come to Columbia, Dartmouth and Harvard.
Princeton is 25-8-1 all-time against the Bears and 9-7-1 in games played at Brown. The Tigers defeated Brown 7-1 a season ago at home. Rachel Neufeld had two goals and an assist in the win.
The Tigers conclude the weekend against fourth-ranked Connecticut in the first of two meetings in three weeks for the two teams. The Huskies are currently 12-1 overall and 4-0 in the Big East and play host to Rutgers on Saturday in advance of Sunday's game. UConn's only loss of the season came to Boston College and the Huskies enter the weekend having won six in a row, including a 10-0 win at Georgetown and a 2-1 win over Virginia last weekend.
UConn leads the all-time series with Princeton 10-7 overall and holds a 6-3 edge in games played in Storrs. The teams have alternated wins and losses over the past four seasons, with UConn earning a 4-2 win at home last season, by breaking a 2-2 deadlock with two goals in the final nine minutes.
Next weekend the 2011 Pan American Games begin in Guadalajara, Mexico. Katie Reinprecht, Julia Reinprecht and Michelle Cesan, all of whom are taking the year off of school to compete for the U.S. National Team, will play for the United States at the event, which serves as an Olympic qualifier. Princeton assistant coach Nate Franks will also be in Guadalajara, serving as an assistant coach for the team. GoPrincetonTigers.com will provide updates next week once the games begin.
