CAMBRIDGE, Mass. (10/22/11) - The Princeton field hockey team improved to 4-1 in the Ivy League with a 4-1 win over Harvard on Saturday afternoon at Jordan Field. Allison Evans scored two goals to help Princeton remain in a first-place tie in the league standings.
Five teams entered the weekend with identical 3-1 league records, but four were paired up in games. Princeton and Harvard were two of those teams so the loss knocks Harvard a game behind the Tigers. In the other game, Columbia defeated Dartmouth, so Princeton and Columbia now top the league standings at 4-1. Yale could join the group with a win on Sunday against Penn. Princeton has already defeated both Columbia and Yale this season.
Princeton doubled up Harvard in both goals and shots in the win as the Tigers took their 18th straight meeting from Harvard. Princeton struck first in the game but not before Tiger goalie Christina Maida made back-to-back stops in the 10th minute. Princeton took control from that point on and Evans put Princeton ahead for good with her ninth of the year at 19:18. The goal came on Princeton's seventh shot and deflected off a Harvard player.
Amanda Bird gave Princeton a 2-0 lead in the 28th minute when she scored her fifth of the season. The goal came off a penalty corner and was assisted by Charlotte Krause and Sydney Kirby.
The Tigers stretched their lead in the second half on goals from Evans and Rachel Neufeld. Evans team-leading 10th of the season came on the rebound of her own shot eight minutes into the half and Neufeld scored her third of the season two minutes later on the rebound of a Molly Goodman shot.
Noel Painter got the Crimson on the board in the 48th minute snapping a long shutout string. Princeton had not allowed a goal to Harvard since the 2006 season.
Maida made six saves for Princeton in the win, while Cynthia Tassopoulos had 10 in the loss. Princeton is now 7-7 overall.
The Tigers return home for two games next weekend, playing host to Cornell on Saturday and Connecticut on Sunday.
