Women's Squash Concludes Season With Road Pair, Including No. 3 Trinity
February 10, 2011 | Women's Squash
The Princeton women's squash team is one week away from welcoming its peers in collegiate squash to Jadwin Gym for the 2011 Howe Cup team national championships. The Tigers will look to get in the best form possible with a pair of weekend road matches, including a Sunday match at No. 3 Trinity.
Princeton is currently ranked fifth nationally and will look to end a season-long trend on Sunday. The Tigers are undefeated against all teams ranked below them in the national polls, but they have yet to defeat a higher-ranked team. That continued last Sunday, when the Tigers fell 7-2 to top-ranked Harvard. Princeton got two wins in its top three spots; senior Jackie Moss continued her perfect season with a 3-0 victory over Nirasha Gurgue, and freshman Libby Eyre had the most impressive win of her young career with a 9-11, 11-7, 11-8, 8-11, 11-7 marathon win over Alisha Mashruwala at the No. 3 spot.
Princeton will open the weekend Saturday at 2 p.m. when it takes on Mt. Holyoke in South Hadley, Mass. Mt. Holyoke has won five straight and has gotten good play from No. 1 Randima Ranaweera. The Tigers will take on third-ranked Trinity Sunday at 1; Trinity is coming off a 7-2 loss to No. 1 Harvard, although it nearly picked up a thrilling win from No. 1 Catalina Pelaez against Harvard's Laura Gemmell. Pelaez took the 2010 national champion five sets and led 2-1, but she lost an 11-6 game to close out the match.
Princeton nearly earned its biggest upset win last season against a Trinity team ranked second at the time. Julie Cerullo, then a freshman, had the biggest win of her career with a 3-1 victory over 2009 individual national champion Nour Baghat. A 3-2 win from current junior Katie Giovinazzo and a pair of victories from graduated seniors had the Tigers on the brink of victory, but the Bantams swept the final shift of matches to pull out the 5-4 victory.
