Track & Field Sweeps HYP; Men Win 14 of 16 Events

NEW HAVEN, Conn. (2/12/11) - The Princeton men's track & field team won its seventh straight HYP title as the Tigers dominated winning 14 of the 16 events for 114 points. Harvard finished second with 36 points and Yale picked up 19 as the host school.
The Tigers won the 60, 400, 800, 1000, mile, 3000, hurdles, 4x400, high jump, pole vault, long jump, triple jump, shot put and weight throw. Harvard earned victories in the two other events, the 500 and 4x800.
Of the seven finalists in the 60-meter dash, six were Tigers. Junior Kashif Smith came out on top winning the race in 6.98, the only sprinter to clock in under seven seconds. Freshman Brian Mills was second at 7.17, followed by sophomore Sebastian Steffen at 7.20 and junior Ivan Charbonneau at 7.21. The five would give Princeton 11 points.
The Tigers went 1-2-3 in the 60-meter hurdles. Sophomore Richard Sheldon would lead the trio with a time of 8.18. Senior Adam Thayer was second at 8.45 and freshman Tom Hopkins third at 8.47.
Junior Austin Hollimon and senior Mike Eddy continued the sprints success. Hollimon was first in the 200, a non-scored event, running 21.54, to break the Cameron Atkinson's school record. It is the third fastest time in the league history. Steffen was second and Smith was third at 22.24 and 22.49. Eddy won the 400 with an HYP record time of 48.23. Freshman Tom Hopkins was second at 48.75 giving Princeton eight points in the event.
The 4x400 relay swapped out a leg, as senior Jordan Sawadogo took the second leg, replacing Hopkins. Eddy, Sawadogo, Russell Dinkins and Hollimon on the cleanup ran 3:14.77 to beat Yale's relay by more than four seconds. Sawadogo would go on to place third in the 500 with a time of 1:04.29, just .29 seconds behind Yale's second-place finishers.
The 4x800 of Donn Cabral, Kyle Soloff, Michael Palmisano and Michael Williams took second to Harvard with a time of 7:45.23. Cabral and Soloff went 1-2 in the mile, with Cabral running a winning time of 4:07.29 followed by Soloff at 4:09.08.
Sophomore Peter Callahan won the 800 followed by Dinkins in second place. Callahan finished at 1:48.66 breaking a 22-year HYP record with the league's fourth fastest time in the 800 in history. Dinkins ran in at 1:49.39, as he and Callahan were the only two to finish under 1:50.
Junior Trevor Van Ackeren won the 1000 at 2:25.46 and senior Mark Amirault was fourth at 2:26.31.
Junior Tyler King won the 3000 in a time of 8:11.07, beating out Harvard's Dan Chenoweth by 0.09 seconds. Freshman duo Alejandro Arroyo Yamin and Chris Bendsten ran 8:12.36 and 8:14.02 to place third and fourth.
In the center of the track, Princeton dominated the jumps. Freshman Damon McLean won both the long and triple jumps. He reached 7.11 meters in the long jump, with Hopkins following in second place at 7.10. In the triple he jumped to 15.56 meters. Junior Issac Serwanga would take second leaping to 14.17.
Another freshman posted a victory in the jumps, the high jump. Omar Jarrett cleared 1.99 meters to win the event. Serwanga would take second with a mark of 1.94, followed by Sheldon in fourth place with a mark of 1.89, as the Tigers earned nine of the possible 11 points.
Junior David Slovenksi cleared 5.15 meters to win the pole vault. Classmate Derek Hynes was the runner up reaching 4.80.
Seniors Craig Pearce and George Abyad posted wins in the throws. Pearce won the weight throw throwing to 19.05 meters. The next closest thrower would only reach 17.70 meters. Abyad threw to 17.18 meters in the shot put, beating out Dustin Brode of Harvard by over a foot. Junior Patrick Park was third throwing to 16.06.
The Tigers host the Princeton Invitational, next Saturday with the first event beginning at 11 a.m.
