Women's Squash Falls 6-3 To Top-Seeded Yale In Howe Cup Semifinal
February 19, 2011 | Women's Squash
Despite a spirited effort that kept Princeton in the match until the final two contests were played, the fifth-seeded Tigers fell 6-3 to undefeated and top-seeded Yale during Saturday's semifinal at the Howe Cup championships. Yale will play second-seeded Harvard for the national title Sunday afternoon.
One day after its impressive 7-2 win over fourth-seeded Penn, Princeton jumped out strong against the unbeaten Bulldogs. Freshmen Libby Eyre (No. 3) and Alex Sawin (No. 6) kept their perfect weekends going with 3-0 victories. Yale picked up a win at the No. 9 spot to trail 2-1 after the first shift.
Princeton sophomore Casey Cortes, who continues to show her toughness in big matches, rallied from a 2-1 deficit to win a 3-2 contest at the No. 8 spot, but Yale got a 3-2 comeback win at No. 5 and a sweep at No. 2 to even the match at 3-3. The win at No. 5 for Rhetta Nadas was one of two Yale wins that came with the fifth game tied at 10-10. Nadas rallied after a strong start from Katie Giovinazzo to win the final three games, including a 14-12 win in the finale.
The Bulldogs swept the final three matches, including another five-game match at No. 7 in which Caroline Reigeluth topped Nikki Sequeira 12-10 in the fifth, to clinch the 6-3 win.
Princeton will play Trinity Sunday for third place overall; Trinity lost 6-3 to Harvard.
