NEW HAVEN, Conn. (2/19/11) - The Princeton women's hockey team clinched a fourth-place finish in the ECAC Hockey standings with a 4-1 win at Yale on Saturday afternoon. Princeton will host Quinnipiac in a best-of-three ECAC Quarterfinal series next weekend at Hobey Baker Rink.
Princeton finishes the regular season 16-12-1 overall and 13-8-1 in the ECAC. Princeton, which was 3-10-1 overall and 3-6-1 in the league on Dec. 3, finished the season winning 13 of 15 games to ascend into a finish in the league's top third and earn a home-ice playoff series for the second time in three seasons.
Princeton jumped to fourth in the final standings with a weekend sweep of Brown and Yale. The Tigers entered the weekend a point behind Quinnipiac in the standings, but the Bobcats lost to Yale and tied Brown to fall to fifth place in the final rundown.
On Saturday the Tigers broke open a 1-1 game less than a minute into the second period when Denna Laing netted her seventh goal of the season and her first of the game 41 seconds into the stanza. The goal was assisted by Sally Butler, who scored Princeton's first goal midway through the first period, and Olivia Mucha. Princeton padded the lead when Paula Romanchuk scored her eighth goal of the year in the final minute of the second period from Julie Johnson and Butler.
Laing completed the scoring midway through the third period as Princeton claimed the 4-1 final. Johnson had an assist on the goal and had three primary helpers in the game. Charissa Stadnyk also assisted on the tally.
Princeton outshot Yale 28-19 in the win. Princeton goaltender Rachel Weber made 18 saves for the win, while Jackee Snikeris had 24 saves in the loss.
Princeton will now host Quinnipiac in next weekend's ECAC quarterfinals. Game times for the three games have yet to be determined. Princeton and Quinnipiac split in the regular season, each winning at home, and the teams have never met in the postseason.
