Women's Basketball Defeats Cornell 71-44

ITHACA, N.Y. (2/25/11) - The Princeton women's basketball team reached 20 wins for the second straight year, as the Tigers defeated Cornell 71-44 at Newman Arena on Friday, Feb. 25. Princeton improves to 20-4 overall and 9-1 in the Ivy League.
Junior Lauren Edwards had a game-high 16 points, while chipping in two rebounds, assists, and steals apiece. Senior Addie Micir contributed 14 points and classmate Krystal Hill added nine. Sophomore Megan Bowen led the team on the glass with seven rebounds and point guard Lauren Polansky was next in line with six.
"I love how we started the game with great energy and solid team defense," head coach Courtney Banghart said. "Cornell is a team that plays hard throughout so we knew we'd have to sustain our effort for 40 minutes."
Princeton started the game on a 14-4 run and continued to push its lead throughout the first half. The Tigers held Cornell to just seven field goals in the first frame while shooting 55.2 percent from the field themselves.
A three by Edwards at 10:52 made it 27-8. It would be nearly five minutes until Princeton would get its next basket, a fast break layup by Hill.
The Tigers would triple-up the Big Red, 30-10, on a free throw by Devona Allgood and would score the game's next six points to make it 36-10 with 2:20 remaining.
Cornell would go on a 6-0 run with Clare Fitzpatrick hitting two jumpers and Maka Anyanwu going 2 for 2 from the line.
Bowen would score the half's last basket with a layup giving Princeton a 22-point edge, 38-16, at intermission.
Cornell started the second with a three but Edwards would hit back-to-back baskets and Hung added a layup to make give Princeton a 44-19 lead with 13:37 on the clock.
After a 4-0 Big Red run that cut Princeton's lead back to 21, a Kristen Helmstetter layup and a three by Micir from the wing put the Tigers but Princeton back up 26, 49-23 with 11:08 left.
Three minutes later Nicole Hung would hit three free throws to give Princeton its largest lead of the game, 56-28.
Princeton staved off a 5-0 Cornell spurt and was able to get back its 28-point edge on a long ball from Hill at 4:46.
The Big Red answered back with a 7-0 run to make it 61-40 at 2:19. The Tigers would hold Cornell without a field goal for the last 2:43 but the Big Red managed four free throws, while Princeton had two threes from Laura Johnson and layups from Hill and Bowen.
Fitzpatrick paced the Big Red with eight points, while Allyson DiMagno scored seven whie leading the team on the glass with five rebounds. Taylor Flynn scored six while Stephanie Long and Shelby Lyman had five points apiece. Cornell shot 31.8 percent (41-44) from the floor, 72.2 percent (13-18) from the line and went 3 of 12 from long range.
Princeton shots 49.1 percent (28-57) from the floor, 52.9 percent (9-17) from long range and was 6 for 8 from the charity stripe.
Princeton will travel to Columbia for a 7 p.m., game tomorrow night.
