March 18, 2011 | Softball
COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- Princeton opened play at the University of Maryland's tournament with a split Friday, putting up 15 hits in a five-inning, 12-0 win over Hampton before being held to one hit against the host Terrapins in a 6-0 defeat.
The Tigers will meet Villanova and Hampton Saturday in back-to-back games beginning at 3:45 p.m. before closing out the spring break week with a 10 a.m. game against Utah Sunday.
All nine Princeton batters got a hit in the opener against Hampton while Tory Roberts was 3 for 4. The Tigers pushed across three runs apiece in the first and third innings before putting the game into run-rule territory with a six-run fourth. That inning saw Princeton's only home run of the day, a leadoff shot by Kelsey VandeBergh.
Liza Kuhn (2-1) struck out four and allowed five hits in five innings to get the win, which continued Princeton's winning streak into a fourth game. Hampton fell to 5-14 with the loss.
Maryland pitcher Ashley Czechner struck out 13 Tigers and gave up just one hit in getting a 6-0 win that lifted her to 7-1 on the season.
The Terrapins scored three runs apiece in the third and fourth innings against Alex Peyton (2-4) to drop the Tigers to 5-8 on the season and improve Maryland to 16-9. VandeBergh had Princeton's only hit with a fourth-inning single.
