STANFORD, Calif. (3/26/11) - Six personal records were set as the Princeton men's track team sent a select group to the Stanford Invitational on March 25-26.
Princeton had three top-10 finishers in the 5,000-meter run. Freshman Chris Bendtsen stunned the field in section 2 when he finished in third place with a record time of 14:04.83, nearly 14 seconds faster than his previous best. Bendtsen was 6 or 7 after 2600 meters and moved up to second after 4k where he stayed for the final three laps. Two Stanford runners started to push ahead in the final 1.5 laps but on the final corner Bendtsen kicked to challenge for second place, finishing 0:00.03 seconds behind the runner-up. In the same race freshman Alejandro Arroyo Yamin posted a PR of 14:25.04.
In section 1 it was senior Mark Amirault and junior Donn Cabral finishing fourth and sixth with personal bests, both finishing in under 14 minutes. Amirault clocked in at 13:45.69 and Cabral ran 13:46.50. Cabral and Amirault were the 4-7 most of the race. Behind the first three runners out in front, Cabral led a long train with Amirault running right behind him. Amirault pushed ahead of Cabral around 3k. They would be the 3-4 runners, in that order, at 3200 meters. With two laps to go Cabral took over Amirault as the 405 runners. Down the final stretch Amirault pushed ahead to take fourth with Cabral sixth. In addition, senior Kyle Soloff ran 14:06.89.
Junior Brian Leung ran the 10,000-meter run and finished 12th at 29:09.94.
Two Tigers ran the 1500 with junior Joe Stilin recording a PR of 3:53.59 in the section 3 race where he finished in fourth place. Sophomore George Galasso ran 3:59.90 in section 6 to take ninth place.
Sophomore Russell Dinkins was the top collegiate runner in the 800 and was second overall. He ran 1:50.82 behind the Nike-tagged athlete who ran 1:50.47 to win the race. After the gun he settled into third place where he remained for the first 400. As the final lap bell sounded Dinkins dropped back to last. He turned on the jets on the rear straightaway and took the outside past every runner and into first place. On the final straight away the Nike runner outkicked as Dinkins took second.
Junior Trevor Van Ackeren ran a PR 1:52.57 to take fourth in section 4, while Stilin ran 1:55.24 in the same section. Senior Jordan Sawadogo placed eighth in section 2 at 1:53.06.
Princeton hosts the Sam Howell Invitational on April 1-2.
