Men's Track & Field Wins Five on Final Day of Sam Howell

PRINCETON, N.J. (4/2/11) - The Princeton men's track & field team won five events on the final day of the Sam Howell Invitational on Saturday, April 2 at Weaver Stadium.
Senior George Abyad won the shot put and discus, while freshman Tom Hopkins won the long jump and 100-meter dash. Senior Craig Pearce won the hammer throw with a personal record.
Princeton went 1-2-3 in the 100-meter dash with Hopkins winning the event at 10.91. Sophomore Sebastian Steffen ran 11.04 for second place, and classmate Jason Reagor was third at 11.26. Senior Jim Behot ran 11.39 to finish eighth.
Hopkins also won the long jump launching to 6.91 meters (22-8) and placed second in the 200 at 21.68.
Steffen ran 21.86 to finish in fourth place in the 200, while Behot would record a new PR.
Senior Adam Thayer was the runner up in the 110-meter hurdles at 14.70. Sophomore Richard Sheldon was right on his heels clocking in at 14.75 for third place.
For the second straight meet, junior Nilan Schnure recorded a PR in the 400-meter hurdles. He was third at 55.28, besting the 55.50 he ran at USF Invite.
The 4x100 relay of Ivan Charbonneau, Ricky Kearney, Hopkins and Steffen was third at 42.30. Princeton's A relay in the 4x400 was scratched with the B relay of Michael Palmisano, Matt Gonzalez, Sheldon and Schnure clocking in at 3:25.68 for sixth place.
Pearce won the hammer throw with a throw of 63.97 meters (209-10), a new personal best, reaching it on his third throw of the day.
Abyad won the shot put with a throw of 16.03 (52-7.25) on his very first throw of the day. He went on the win the discus as well at 50.74 (166-06), on his fourth try.
Junior Patrick Park followed up with fifth-place finishes in both events. He threw the shot put to 15.12 (49-7.25) and the discus to 43.67 (143-03).
Freshman Omar Jarrett medaled in the high jump, taking third place as he cleared 1.94 (6-4.25). Sheldon reached 1.84 (6-0.50) to finish in sixth place.
Junior Derek Hynes cleared 4.60 (15-1) in the pole vault to take fourth.
Princeton will compete at the George Mason Invitational and the Rutgers Invitational next Saturday, April 9.
