Men's Track & Field Wins Three on Final Day of Larry Ellis Invite

PRINCETON, N.J. (4/23/11) - Princeton won three events on the final day of the Larry Ellis Memorial Invitational, on Saturday, April 23. Senior Craig Pearce won the hammer throw, junior David Slovenski won the pole vault and junior Russell Dinkins was first in the 400.
With over 35 teams competing it was a busy day at Weaver Stadium. There were some showers in the early afternoon but things cleared up a couple hours into the meet. However, the pole vault and high jump were moved indoors.
Pearce won the hammer throw with a throw of 62.70 (205-08).Slovenski won the pole vault by clearing 5.15 meters (16-10.75). Fellow junior Derek Hynes was third in the event with a mark of 4.95 (16-2.75).
The Tigers went 1-2-3 in the 400, an event that had 65 total competitors. Dinkins won the race at 47.18, followed by junior Austin Hollimon at 47.47 and senior Mike Eddy at 47.97. Freshman Tom Hopkins would place sixth overall at 48.47.
Hollimon would post the best time for the Tigers in the 200, at 21.49 to place sixth. Sophomore Sebastian Steffen was eighth at 21.83. Eddy won his section, and was 12th overall at 22.14.
In the 100, Steffen won his section and was ninth overall at 11.06.
Junior Nilan Schnure posted a PR in the 400-meter intermediate hurdles at 55.23.
Senior George Abyad earned second and third places in the shot put and discus, respectively. In the shot put her threw to 16.56 meters (54-5.00) and reached 50.30 (164-06) in the discus. Junior Patrick Park was sixth in the shot put reaching 15.80 (51-10) on his third throw of the afternoon.
In the jumps, senior Dion Lehman finished second in the long jump. He reached 7.21 (23-8) on his final jump. Freshman Tom Hopkins placed third at 7.18 (23-6.75), while freshman Damon McLean was fifth at 6.97 (22-10.50). In the triple jump, senior Garner McCloud leaped to 13.95 (45-9.25) to finish in fourth place.
Jason Reagor, Ricky Kearney, Hopkins and Steffen were third at 41.61 in a close race of the 4x100. Just 0.31 seconds separated the top three teams.
Next up for Princeton is the Penn Relays, being held at Franklin Field, on April 28-30.
DAY 1 RECAP
Senior Mark Amirault won the men's mile as day one of the Larry Ellis Memorial Invitational came to a close at Weaver Stadium on Friday, April 22. Amirault won the mile in 4:03.00.
Sophomore Russell Dinkins was sixth in section 1 and finished seventh out of 93 in the 800, clocking in at 1:50.32. Classmate Peter Callahan was ninth out of 97 in the 1500, with a time of 3:48.07. Teammate Joe Stilin recorded a PR in the event at 3:49.36.Princeton alum David Nightingale '08 won the 5000 with the only time under 14 minutes as he clocked in at 13:58.58. Nightgale was an All-America in the event when he wore the Orange & Black, highlighted by an eighth place finish in the 2007 NCAA Outdoor Championship. Freshman Chris Bendtsen was the first Tiger across the line, at 14:09.40, to finish ninth out of 151 track athletes that took on the final event of the night.
Senior Tyler King finished 13th overall in the steeplechase, out of 54 competitors. He ran a new PR of 9:05, bettering his previous best by more than 11 seconds. Also recording a PR was fresman Michael Williams. He shaved more than three seconds off his PR in the 800, running in at 1:50 flat.
Day two begins at noon tomorrow, Saturday, April 23 at Weaver Stadium.
