Baseball Earns Split at Navy with Win in Nightcap
March 27, 2011 | Baseball
Game 1 (Box Score)
Navy took the opening game 4-3 as a Greg Dupell's sac fly in the fifth snapped a 3-3 tie in the win for the Midshipmen. Princeton had leads of 1-0 and 3-1 in the loss, but in both cases Navy evened the score in the bottom half inning after Princeton went ahead.
The teams traded second inning runs as Nate Baird singled in Sam Mulroy after a lead-off ground-rule double and Nick Driscoll drove in a Navy run with a single in the bottom of the second. Two innings later, Steve Harrington drove in two Princeton runs with a bases load single, but a triple from Driscoll and a pinch-hit double off the bat of Jonathan Wright drove in the runs, setting things up for Dupell's RBI in the fifth inning.
Ben Nelson got the win for Navy as he surrendered three runs on six hits in 5.1 innings. The save went to Joel Rinehart. Mike Ford went the distance for Princeton, allowing four runs on 10 hits in six innings.
Game 2 (Box Score)
The Tigers salvaged their weekend at Navy with a 12-8 win in the nightcap on Sunday. Princeton led 7-0 after the second, but found itself trailing 8-7 after five innings. Princeton regained the lead in the sixth and added runs in the seventh and eight to seal the win.
A.J. Goetz got the win in relief as he allowed a single run on one hit over four innings. Mulroy drove in three runs in the win while Matt Bowman and Ford each had three hits.
Princeton took advantage of two Navy errors to score seven unearned runs in the second inning. Baird and Harrington each reached on errors and Ryan Albert's single loaded the bases for Alex Flink, whose single plated the first two runs. Bowman added a run-scoring single in the inning and Mulroy tripled home a pair of runs.
Navy clawed its way back with four runs in the third inning and three in the fourth to draw even at 7-7. Navy added a single run in the fifth inning on a Dylan Wheeler sacrifice fly and the Midshipmen led 8-7.
Princeton answered immediately though with three runs in the top of the sixth as runs scored on three consecutive players. Singles from Mulroy and Harrington and a Baird groundout put Princeton back ahead. The Tigers added single insurance runs in the seventh when Alec Keller drove in Albert with a sac fly and in the eighth when Ford hit a solo home run.
Michael Fagan allowed seven runs on five hits in four innings and David Palms pitched a scoreless ninth to seal the win. The loss went to Stephen Greiss.
