#4 Tiger Heavies Open Season With Wins Over Syracuse, Georgetown
April 02, 2011 | Heavyweight Rowing
The fourth-ranked Princeton men's heavyweights have four home regattas this season, and it showed Saturday how strong it could be on its home course. The Tigers swept a pair of teams, including No. 7 Syracuse, in its season-opening regatta.
The event was held as a scrimmage that started with the 2K races, and then included several shorter pieces between the crews.
Coming off its silver medal at the 2010 EARC Championships, Princeton took all four races in its first competition of 2011. The varsity eight took an impressive 6.5-second victory over Syracuse with a winning time of 5:48.6. The Orange placed second in 5:55.1, just ahead of Georgetown (5:56.5).
The Tiger 2V also won its first race of the season, although this one came in much closer fashion. Princeton won in 6:01.4, just 3.3 seconds faster than Syracuse. The Tiger 3V took the closest race of the day, winning in 6:12.3 for a 1.9-second win over Syracuse.
The Princeton novice eight had a very successful start to its collegiate career, scoring the biggest margin of victory on the day with a winning time of 6:06.3. That time topped Syracuse by more than 12 seconds.
Princeton will make its only road trip of the regular season when it heads to the Schulykill River in Philadelphia to take on Penn and Columbia in the historic Childs Cup competition. The Childs Cup is the oldest collegiate trophy in the sport, and Princeton regained it last season.
