May 18, 2011 | Women's Soccer
Liana Cornacchio (Briarcliff/Briarcliff, N.Y.), who Shackford calls a "natural goal-scorer who is always in the right place at the right time," helped her
Syosset Sting club team to six New York State Cup championships, two Region I titles and a national finalist spot in 2010. For Briarcliff High, Cornacchio was a starting forward on three state Class B championship teams, winning two state tournament MVP honors as well as all-section and all-state honors in each of her four years. Cornacchio earned high school All-America honors from the NSCAA in 2009 and 2010.
Melissa Downey (McLean/McLean, Va.) has played club soccer for the MPS Dragons and the Bethesda Dragons, winning
two state cup titles and advancing to three state cup finals with MPS. Downey's USYS team made the national championships in 2010. At McLean, Downey was a three-time all-district honorable mention before earning first-team all-district honors this season. Shackford says Downey "is an outside midfielder with great skill and creativity. She has the ability to beat people, is a great passer and can also score goals."
Jessica Haley (Frederica Academy/St. Simons Island, Ga.) won state titles at Frederica the past two seasons while
earning all-region and all-state each of the last two years. On the club level, Haley has played for both the Bethesda Dragons and the Ponte Vedra Storm, teams that have both won state titles. Ponte Vedra advanced to the USYS national championships in 2009. Haley is currently playing for a newly formed WPSL team, the Florida FC Sol. Shackford says Haley "is a holding midfielder with phenomenal passing ability. She has the skill to pick people out and put them into great positions on the field."
Darcy Hargadon (Oak Park-River Forest/Oak Park, Ill.) is a goalkeeper who has played on
Olympic Development teams at both the state and regional team levels. Hargadon plays club soccer for Eclipse, the same program that produced current Tiger Stephanie Iantorno, winning two state championships with that club. Shackford says Hargadon "is a very solid keeper, both technically sound and a good communicator."
Lauren Lazo (Cactus Shadows/Scottsdale, Ariz.) plays her club soccer for S.C. Del Sol Maxwell, an eight-time Arizona
state champion and a national top-10 team. As a senior, Lazo played high school soccer, earning regional player of the year and first-team all-state honors. Shackford says Lazo "is a central midfielder or forward with the ability to create and score goals. She is an accomplished attacking player with great pace and work ethic."
Gabrielle Ragazzo (The Bolles School/Jacksonville, Fla.) plays her club soccer for the Ponte
Vedra Storm, which was a national finalist, a regional champion and a state champion during her time on the team. She was a four-year member of the Florida ODP team and a two-year member of the Region III ODP pool. Ragazzo was also a Class 3A state Player of the Year nominee. Shackford calls Ragazzo "an athletic outside player with great technical ability. She can get by players with both skill and speed, and can play anywhere on the field."
MicKenzie Roberts-Lahti (Covenant Christian/Plainfield, Ind.) has played since 2006 with
the Carmel United Soccer Club's 93 Elite, earning "Player to Watch" and "four-star goalkeeper" honors from Top Drawer Soccer. With the Carmel team, Roberts-Lahti was a USYS Indiana State Cup champion three times before making the semifinals in 2010. At Covenant Christian, Roberts-Lahti was a National Christian School Athletic Association All-America honoree in 2008 and 2009. From 2005-09, Roberts-Lahti was on the '92 Indiana ODP team. Shackford says Roberts-Lahti "is a goalkeeper with great field presence and tactical awareness."
The Tigers graduated four seniors from the 2010 team that pushed the Ivy League race until the final day.
