Men's Track & Field Qualifies 14 for NCAA East Regional

PRINCETON, N.J. (5/19/11) - Fourteen members of the Princeton men's track & field team will participate in the 2011 NCAA East Regional it was announced by the NCAA on Thursday, May 19. The East Regional will be held in Bloomington, Ind., on the campus of Indiana University on May 26-28.
Three Tigers will compete in the 400-meter dash. They include senior Mike Eddy, junior Austin Hollimon and freshman Tom Hopkins. The first round is slated for Thursday at 7 p.m., with the quarterfinals on Friday at 5:45 p.m. Eddy competed in the event last year, finishing 37th. Hollimon ranks 29th with a time of 46.99 which he recorded in the first meet of the season at South Florida. Hopkins is 33rd with a time 47.14 and Eddy is 39th at 47.21, with both times recorded at Heps. The top three in each of six heats advance, plus the next six fastest times overall.
Sophomore Russell Dinkins makes his second straight outdoor appearance in the 800. His face is set for Thursday at 8 p.m., with the next round the following day at 6:45 p.m. Like the 400, the top three in each of six heats advance, plus the next six fastest times overall. Dinkins ranks 28th at 1:49.76 recorded at Heps.
Junior Joe Stilin will run in the 1500 on Thursday at 5 p.m. The top five from each of the four heats, plus the next four best times advance to the quarterfinals. Stilin's time of 3:44.69 set during the Larry Ellis ranks him 19th in the region.
Junior Donn Cabral will compete in both the steeplechase and the 5k. Cabral was ranked 13th in the region in the steeplechase last year when he finished second in the nation. Cabral looks to qualify for Championships in Iowa on Friday at 9:10 p.m. He has competed in the steeplechase just twice this season with his best time of 8:41.93 at Heps, ranking him second.
Last year in the 5k, Cabral ranked 14th in the region and went on to place sixth in the nation. He will be joined in the 5k by seniors Mark Amirault and Kyle Soloff and freshmen Chris Bendtsen and Alejandro Arroyo Yamin. The 5k runs at 8:45 p.m., on Saturday. Cabral, Amirault and Soloff all ran in the event last year with Cabral and Soloff reaching the finals in the event. Amirault sports the fourth best time in the nation at 13:45.69 and Cabral is sixth at 13:46.50. Bendsten and Soloff are 31st and 32nd at 14:04.83 and 14:06.89.
The 4x400 is one of 24 relays competing in the regional. The relay will be held on Saturday at 9:45 p.m, with the top 12 teams advancing. The Tigers' time of 3:07.57 ranks 12th in the region.
Junior David Slovenski will compete in his first NCAA pole vault, on Friday at 6 p.m. He has the sixth-best mark in the region at 5.30 meters.
Also competing in his first post season is junior thrower Patrick Park. Park's throw of 17.03 meters qualified him for the regional where he will face 47 other competitors on Thursday at 1 p.m., the first event for the Tigers.
Senior George Abyad will compete in the discus for the second straight season. His event will be held at 5 p.m., on Saturday. Abyad sits 34th in the region with a throw of 52.70 at the Tom Jones Invitational.
Senior Craig Pearce will be in the hammer throw on Friday at 11 a.m., second year. He threw a PR of 63.97 at the Sam Howell Meet which sits him seventh in the rankings.
Princeton leads all Ivy League schools in qualified student-athletes with 23 total from both the men's and women's teams.
