Four Qualify for NCAA Track & Field Championships After Day 2

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (5/27/11) - Four members of the Princeton men's track & field team have secured spots in the NCAA Championships in Des Moines, Iowa after day two of the NCAA East Regional came to a close at Indiana University today, May 27.
Senior Craig Pearce became the first Tiger to move on to the Championships, after his performance in the hammer throw this afternoon. Pearce recorded a mark of 62.31 meters (204-05) on his second of six throws to place 10th out of 48. Pearce will compete in the national final on Thursday, June 9 at 3 p.m.
Sophomore Russell Dinkins finished 10th overall and fourth in heat 2 in the quarterfinals of the 800. His time of 1:49.05, a season best, qualifies him for the semifinals on Wednesday, June 8 at 7:45 p.m.
Junior Donn Cabral won his heat in the steeplechase and finished third overall at 8:43.11 to earn his way to the NCAA Championships for the second straight year in the event. The national runner-up in the event last year, Cabral earned All-America as well. The national semifinal will be held on Wednesday, June 8 at 7:45 p.m.
Junior David Slovenski cleared 5.15 (16-10.75) to finish 12th to earn a place in the national final. He cleared 5.15 on his first attempt, after clearing 4.90 and 5.05. The final is scheduled for Wednesday, June 8 at 5:35 p.m.
In the quarterfinals of the 400, junior Austin Hollimon ran 47.03, 0.84 seconds better than his preliminary time but finished three places shy of qualifying, taking 15th. Freshman Tom Hopkins was 22nd at 47.64, also bettering his first round time by 0.30 seconds.
Tomorrow, the final day of the East Regional, Princeton will compete in three events. Seniors Mark Amirault and Kyle Soloff, freshmen Chris Bendtsen and Alejandro Arroyo Yamin, along with Cabral will run in the 5k at 8:45 p.m. An hour later the 4x400 relay will take to the track. Senior George Abyad will be the final field competitor for Princeton at the Regional as he throws the discus at 5 p.m.
