Women's Soccer Spring Update
May 04, 2011 | Women's Soccer
Princeton's women's soccer team handed out its annual awards and recognized its four-member senior class at its recent banquet, just one of the news items the program will announce over the spring.
Alyssa Pont, Lauren Whatley and co-captains Kayleigh Iatarola and Alexandra Valerio, the Princeton women's soccer Class of 2011, received framed jerseys at the banquet in recognition of a career that included an Ivy League championship and a trip to the NCAA tournament as sophomores. The Tigers had even or winning records in all four seasons the foursome was together, including winning records in each of the last three seasons.
The team's Women's Soccer Award, given to the team's most valuable player, went to sophomore defender Alison Nabatoff, who was a second-team All-Ivy League honoree a year after sharing the Ivy League Rookie of the Year award. Nabatoff started all 14 games played in the Tiger backfield.
Valerio won the Kathy Kobler Garrett '91 award, which is presented to the player whose generosity, positive attitude, genuine concern for others, and quiet energy makes her essential to the success of the team. Garrett was a soccer and softball student-athlete and Princeton and was married to former Tiger running back Judd Garrett '90, the brother of former Princeton quarterback and current Dallas Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett '89. The honor was initiated following her passing in 2007 and was first awarded in 2009.
Nabatoff and sophomore Sara Chehrehsa were named team co-captains for the 2011 season, which will begin Labor Day weekend. Princeton's schedule and incoming freshman class will be announced soon.
