Men's Track & Field Sweeps for the Triple Crown

NEW HAVEN, Conn. (5/8/11) - It came down to the final event of the day, the 4x400. The Ivy League record holders, didn't let its team down as the Princeton 4x400 beat Cornell by more than two seconds to win the race and the 2011 Ivy League Outdoor Heptagonal Championship.
Tom Hopkins, Ricky Kearney, Mike Eddy and Austin Hollimon posted a winning time of 3:11.79.
Princeton had a seven-point lead over Cornell with two events left, the 4x800 and the 4x400.
The Tigers would place fourth in the 4x800 to take a nine-point lead over Cornell, who placed fifth. Michael Palmisano, Jordan Sawadogo, Michael Williams and Russell Dinkins ran 7:27.17 in the relay.
Princeton finished with 197, followed by Cornell with 186. Brown was third with 76, Harvard 75, Yale 44, Dartmouth 42, Penn 33 and Columbia 29.
Princeton started day two with a 57-point lead over Cornell and with 17 events in the books had a 45-point edge. Two events later that lead was taken down to just seven points as the Big Red went 1-2-3 in the triple jump.
The Tigers themselves would earn a 1-2-3 finish, in the 400. Justin Austin Hollimon won the 400 at 46.99. Senior Mike Eddy was second at 47.53 and Tom Hopkins was third at 47.53. In all Princeton earned 24 points in the 400.
For the second straight Heps, junior Donn Cabral was named the Most Outstanding Performer of the Meet. He was named the MOP at the Indoor Heps in February.
Cabral won the steeplechase for the second year in a row, clocking in at 8:41.93. Classmate Tyler King joined him as a scorer as he placed sixth with a time of 9:19.44. Cabral won the 10,000 on the first day.
Senior Mark Amirault became a double winner with victories in the 1500 and the 5000. Amirault won the 5k in 14:12.31, two seconds ahead of Nate Edelman of Cornell. He had a winning time of 3:57.96 in the 1500. Fellow senior Kyle Soloff was third in the 1500 at 3:58.41.
The 4x100 relay of Ivan Charbonneau, Sebastian Steffen, Ricky Kearney, Tom Hopkins was second at 40.97.
In the 110-meter hurdles, sophomore Richard Sheldon and senior Adam Thayer finished third and fourth, respectively. Sheldon clocked in at 14.89 followed by Thayer at 14.90.
Princeton was the runner up in both the 800 and the 200. Sophomore Russell Dinkins was just edged out of winning the 800. He ran 1:50.20, missing first place by five hundreths of a second. Hopkins was the runner up in the 200 with a PR of 21.49. Teammate Steffen was fourth at 21.87 in the 200 and earned another point for the Tigers in the 100 at 10.88.
Inside the track, senior George Abyad finished in second place in the discus. He threw to 52.22 (171-04) on his third attempt of the afternoon.
Freshman Omar Jarrett placed third in the high jump with a mark of 2.04 (6-8.25). Classmate Damon McLean earned points in the triple jump reaching 14.84 (48-8.25).
This is the first time in Ivy League history that a school as won two triple crowns in the same year.
