PRINCETON, N.J. (8/30/11) - The U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCA) released its preseason regional and national rankings this week. The Princeton men's cross country team has been selected 11th in the national poll with 225 points, the highest ranked Ivy League team. Additionally, the Tigers have been voted as the top team in the Mid-Atlantic Region.
The 2010 Tigers recorded the best NCAA finish in program history taking 12th at the NCAA Championships. The Tigers began the championship season winning the Ivy League Heptagonal followed by a victory at the Mid-Atlantic Regional to earn an automatic bid to the NCAA Championships.
Villanova and Georgetown are tabbed to be Princeton's biggest competitors in the regional as they ranked second and third respectively.
A pair of All-America harriers, senior captains Donn Cabral and Brian Leung, leads the team. Cabral posted the second fastest time in Heps history to capture the individual title last year. Two weeks later he finished fifth at regionals and was 34th at nationals. Leung was the first Tiger across the line at regionals and nationals, finished fourth and 21st overall. They become the seventh and eighth harriers to earn All-America honors in program history and are the first pair to do so in the same season.
Princeton graduated two of its scorers in Kyle Soloff and Mark Amirault. Looking to fill their shoes and make an impact this season are veterans senior Max Kaulbach, senior Joe Stilin and sophomore Alejandro Arroyo Yamin. The trio has run in the big meets and has given the Tigers points by finishing in the top five. In addition, Princeton adds seven freshmen to the squad coached by the 2010 Regional Coach of the Year Steve Dolan.
The Tigers open the 2011 season on Saturday, Sept. 10 at the Fordham Fiasco.
