Late Goal Lifts Seton Hall to Win over Women's Soccer
September 10, 2011 | Women's Soccer
Seton Hall's Katlyn Ritter provided the game-winning goal with just 1:52 to play in the second overtime as the Pirates defeated the Princeton women's soccer team 2-1 Friday night in the Tigers' third contest of the season.
The Pirates were Princeton's third straight opponent whose regular season began two weekends before Princeton's did. Last weekend, the Tigers dropped a pair of 3-1 games at Long Beach State and Cal State Northridge in Princeton's season-opening weekend.
"Our performance was much better than in our first time out last weekend," Princeton head coach Julie Shackford said. "It came down to one play after we had chances to finish the match and didn't put them away."
Ending a scoreless run of nearly 80 minutes, junior Caitlin Blosser put Princeton ahead with a goal off an assist from Jen Hoy with 10:31 to go in regulation. Princeton's top two goal scorers a year ago, the pair has combined for all three of the team's goals on the new season.
The lead lasted just 105 seconds, as Seton Hall's Meghan Hayes tied it with 9:06 to play. The tie stood for more than 27 minutes before Ritter's game-winner.
Shots were nearly even for the game as the Pirates won that statistic 14-13 while both teams had five corner kicks. Junior Claire Pinciaro had three saves for Princeton while Seton Hall's Elizabeth Bond pulled in four of five Tiger shots on goal.
The victory continued a hot start to the season for Seton Hall, which improved to 4-1-1 and all six games ended with margins of one goal or fewer. It was the Pirates' first victory in the series against Princeton since 1998 in a series that has been played on and off since 1994. The Tigers won 3-1 last year in Princeton.
A quick turnaround and another experienced Big East foe await Princeton as the Tigers will head to Villanova for an 11 a.m. game Sunday.
