Hoy, Lazo Score in Women's Soccer Win at Villanova
September 11, 2011 | Women's Soccer
After a first weekend in Southern California that saw the Tigers take on a pair of 3-1 losses to teams whose regular seasons were already two weeks old in Long Beach State and Cal State Northridge, Princeton suffered a late 2-1 loss at Seton Hall Friday night when the Pirates scored the game-winning goal with less than two minutes to play in the second overtime.
The deficits went from two goals to one goal to a win in the Tigers' (1-3) fourth game, and did so quickly. Jen Hoy scored eight minutes in, taking a pass from along the endline by freshman Lauren Lazo and knocking it inside the left post.
Hoy, a junior from nearby Sellersville, Pa., also figured on what turned out to be the game-winner, but not before Villanova (4-2-2) tied it in the 36th minute with a goal by Heidi Sabatura, a player from Princeton's backyard in Lawrenceville, N.J.
The tie lasted nearly 10 minutes until, on a succession of passes within the Villanova half by freshman Melissa Downey and Hoy, Lazo scored with 33 seconds to play before the break. Princeton goalkeeper Claire Pinciaro was 3 for 3 in saving Villanova's shots on goal in the second half to make the one-goal lead stand up.
Villanova, playing its fourth weekend of the season, had been undefeated until this weekend when Penn defeated the Wildcats Friday night at the Philadelphia Union's PPL Park. The Ivy League made it two against Villanova in a span of less than 48 hours with Princeton's win Sunday afternoon.
"It was a good win against an experienced team playing its eighth game of the season," Princeton head coach Julie Shackford said after the win, her 170th in her 16-plus seasons leading the team. "Getting that goal right before the end of the half was huge for us."
Princeton has scored in all four games this season, the first time the program has done that since 2004. Four of the seven Princeton points against Villanova came from freshmen, an eight-member class that for one stretch in the first half had five players on the field: Lazo, Downey, Gabrielle Ragazzo, Jessica Haley and Liana Cornacchio.
The Tigers, who are starting the season with five games away from home, will end that string Friday night at Shackford's alma mater, William & Mary.
