Volleyball Splits Final Matches Saturday, Places Two On All-Tourney Team
September 10, 2011 | Women's Volleyball
Strong performances by senior libero Hillary Ford and freshman outside Sarah Hanna helped the Princeton women's volleyball team earn a Saturday split at the 2011 Rutgers Tournament. Their play also earned the pair positions on the all-tournament team.
Princeton, playing without first-team All-Ivy outside Lydia Rudnick for the fourth straight match, dropped Saturday's opener to Binghamton, the eventual winner of the tournament, by a 3-1 margin. Each of the four sets were close, with both teams scoring at least 20 points in each set, but the Bearcats grabbed a 2-0 edge and turned it into a 25-21, 25-22, 21-25, 25-20 win.
Senior Cathryn Quinn was Princeton's standout performer against Binghamton. She recorded a match-high 18 kills and added three blocks, while junior Jennifer Palmquist added eight kills and five blocks. Ford led all players with 28 digs, while freshman setter Ginny Willis added 39 assists.
Freshman middle Tiana Woolridge came off the bench for six kills in seven swings, while sophomore outside Sydney Brombal added eight kills and five digs.
Princeton battled back for a hard-fought 3-1 win over Rutgers in the tournament finale. Three of the four sets were decided by two points in a 25-21, 27-25, 25-27, 25-23 victory. Princeton is now 5-3 on the season.
Princeton had a more balanced attack against the Scarlet Knights; four players recorded at least 10 kills, with Hanna's 17 leading the way. Hanna had only two errors and hit .417 for the match. Palmquist had 12 kills and Quinn added 11, while sophomore outside Chelsea Parker recorded 10 kills. Freshman Francie Jenkins came off the bench to add five kills.
Princeton will return to the court next weekend for its final tournament of the season, the Lehigh/Lafayette Invitational. Following those three matches, Princeton will make its home debut Tuesday, Sept. 20, against Seton Hall; three nights later, the Tigers will play their Ivy League opener against Penn, also at Dillon Gym.
