The five-game run of road games to begin the season for the Princeton women's soccer team will come to an end Friday at William & Mary before the Tigers host La Salle Sunday afternoon to open the home schedule.
Since the season began, the Tigers have been lining up against teams with a two-week head start to their regular seasons, and Princeton (1-3) broke through last Sunday with a win at Villanova. That followed the Tigers coming up short by two goals for a pair of games against Long Beach State and Cal State Northridge, followed by a double-overtime loss at Seton Hall last Friday night.
Both of this weekend's opponents will have the same head start on Princeton. William & Mary (4-1-2) defeated then-No. 13 Georgetown on Sept. 2 the same night Princeton opened it season in California, and the Tribe were ranked No. 21 in the nation before the most recent poll came out Tuesday. La Salle (4-0-1), which was also slated to start its season on Aug. 19 at Rutgers but saw the game postponed, hasn't given up a goal yet in wins over Delaware, Rider, Northeastern and Albany and a tie against Delaware. All but the Drexel and Rider matches came on the road.
Nine players have split William & Mary's 18 goals this season, with freshman Emory Camper collecting four along with three assists. Junior Katherine Yount has been in goal for every minute this season, compiling an 0.94 GAA for the Tribe, of which Princeton head coach Julie Shackford is an alumna. William & Mary has one Princeton-area native on the roster, as junior Katrina Smedley is from Hamilton, N.J., and played at the Peddie School.
La Salle has scored 10 goals in its five games, with a total of eight coming from two players as freshman Kelsey Haycook and sophomore Renee Washington have four apiece. Senior Melissa Sanger has been in goal for all of the Explorers' minutes this season, making 15 total saves to keep the slate clean. Washington is a local product from Ewing, N.J., who attended the nearby Pennington School, while senior Kiersten Mabey, who has started all five games for the Explorers, was a classmate and teammate of Princeton's Kim Menafra at Jackson Memorial.
Princeton junior Jen Hoy and freshman Lauren Lazo were Ivy League award winners for their performances over the last weekend, and Hoy co-leads the team along with junior Caitlin Blosser with two goals apiece. Junior Claire Pinciaro has logged 372 of the team's 378 minutes in goal.
The meeting with William & Mary will be the sixth between the schools, and the Tribe has taken four of the first five. The teams met in 1991, 1992, 2001, 2002 and 2006, with Princeton's win coming in 2001, one of two games (1991) to be held in Princeton. The Tigers are 5-0 all-time against La Salle, but four of those games were played between 1987 and 1990, with Princeton also winning at home in 2005.
The La Salle game will begin a three-match homestand for Princeton, with Lafayette visiting on Wednesday, Sept. 21 and the Ivy League season beginning Saturday, Sept. 24 against Yale.
