Women's XC Gets Taste of the Ivies at HYP Saturday

PRINCETON, N.J. (9/15/11) - The Princeton women's cross country team will get its first taste of the Ivy League competition at the HYP meet in Cambridge, Mass., on Saturday, Sept, 17 at Franklyn Park.
Princeton has won the HYP every year since 2003 with the exception of 2009 when the meet wasn't held. The Tigers won the Fordham Fiasco last weekend with 34 points, nine points ahead of Yale. Sophomore Clare Gallagher had the Tigers' best time at 18:23.83 to finish fifth overall. Junior Alexis Mikaelian, freshman Emily de la Bruyete, junior Greta Feldman and sophomore Molly Higgins were all scorers finishing in the top 12. The Tigers return three of its top five runners from last year including All-America and Heps winner senior Alex Banfich, but have lost steady scorers Ashley Higginson and Sarah Cummings to graduation.
Harvard ran in the Bryant Invitational last weekend in Smithfield, R.I. Freshman Alaina Alvarez was the top runner across the line for the Crimson finishing seventh at 18:20.06. Sophomore Alaina Murphy was 12th, sophomore Morgan Kelly was 15th and freshman Viviana Hanley was 16th. Harvard finished fifth at Heps last year and returned four of its top five, including senior Jeanne Mack, senior Nicole Cochran, senior Kailyn Kuzmuk and junior Sammy Silva. The aforementioned did not run last weekend.
Yale finished second to Princeton in the Fordham Fiasco last weekend earning 43 points. The Bulldogs had three of the top 10 including the race winner sophomore Melissa Chapman who had a winning time of 18:03.63. Junior Jacque Sahlberg was third and freshman Kira Garry was 10th. Juniors Elizabeth Marvin and Caitlin Hudson rounded out the scoring taking 17th and 18th respectively. Yale was eighth at Heps last year and returns its entire top five from that meet, which included Marvin (25th), Anne Lovelace (33rd), Chapman (38th), Jennifer Downing (40th) and Sahlberg (46th).
