In the team's final tune-up before Ivy League play begins Saturday, the Princeton women's soccer team will host Lafayette Wednesday night on Myslik Field at Roberts Stadium.
The Tigers enter the game having suffered some late losses along the way through the early season, as Princeton entered the halftime break tied in four of its five losses only to see the opposition take control near the end. Last time out against La Salle, Princeton battled the Explorers through a scoreless tie until La Salle scored in the 83rd minute in a 1-0 defeat.
Five of Princeton's six opponents so far this season enter this week with a winning record, and the six have a combined mark so far of 27-14-9. All were also scheduled to begin their regular seasons two weeks before Princeton did on Sept. 2.
That will change a bit with Wednesday's game, as Lafayette opened its season just two days before Princeton when it defeated Howard on Aug. 30. The Leopards and Tigers have played on the same dates from Sept. 2 on, with Lafayette playing all seven of its games to a 1-0 final. Four have gone Lafayette's way, while three have not.
Though Lafayette is among the closer Division I schools to Princeton, the teams have had just three total meetings. All of them came early in the tenure of current head coach Julie Shackford from 1996-98 with the Tigers winning all three.
Four Leopards have split the team's four goals, while junior goalkeeper Lauren Smedley has been between the posts for every minute this season and has a GAA of 0.42. The game will be a homecoming of sorts for Smedley, a Hamilton, N.J. native who attended the Peddie School in Hightstown, N.J.
Juniors Jen Hoy and Caitlin Blosser have scored four of Princeton's five goals on the season, with two apiece. Classmate Claire Pinciaro has been in net for all but six minutes this season and brings a GAA of 1.96 into the match.
