QUINN, WILLIS NAMED IVY PLAYERS OF THE WEEK
Coming off its thrilling 3-2 comeback win over reigning Ivy League champion Penn, the Princeton women's volleyball team will look to build on its momentum and stay atop the Ivy League standings when it hosts both Harvard and Dartmouth at Dillon Gym.
Princeton (8-5, 1-0 Ivy League) rallied from deficits of 1-0 and 2-1 to fight off the Quakers in a grueling 3-2 win last Friday at Dillon Gym. Senior Cathryn Quinn recorded 15 kills and eight blocks in the wins, while freshman Ginny Willis recorded a match-best 48 assists and added 10 digs and two kills in her Ivy League debut. Their efforts were recognized by the Ivy League as the pair earned Ivy League Player and Rookie of the Week honors, respectively.
Of course, there were other key contributors in the win. Princeton got a team-best 18 kills from junior outside Lydia Rudnick, while junior rightside Jennifer Palmquist had one of the best matches of her career, recording 12 kills, seven blocks and hitting .476 for the match.
Quinn currently leads the Ivy League with 4.47 points per set and ranks third in both kills per set (3.43) and blocks per set (1.13). She is the only player in the league to rank in the top five in both categories and is coming off a first-team All-Ivy League season.
Senior Hillary Ford, who joins Quinn as a four-year starter, ranks third in the Ivy League with 5.35 digs per set. Willis is fourth in the Ivies with 9.27 assists per set. Rudnick would rank third in the league in kills and fourth in total points, but she hasn't played in enough sets to qualify for the Ivy League rankings.
Harvard is 7-4 on the season and 0-1 in the Ivy League after dropping a 3-2 match to Dartmouth last weekend. Harvard junior Beth Kinsella ranks second in the league in assists (10.05 per set), while senior Christine Wu ranks second in digs with 5.47 per set. Harvard puts pressure on its opponents in the service game; the Crimson leads the Ivy League with 1.40 aces per set.
Dartmouth leads the Ivy League with nine wins and shares first place with Princeton, Yale and Columbia after its five-set win last weekend. The Big Green leads the Ivy League in hitting percentage (.240), opponent hitting percentage (.143), kills per set (13.0) and digs per set (18.0). Senior Madeline Baird leads the Ivy League in kills (3.73), while classmate Annie Villanueva leads in hitting percentage (.384). Freshman Alex Schoenberger has provided an early jolt with 2.9 kills per set, seventh-best in the league.
Princeton split its season series against both teams last year, with each team winning at home in all four matches. Princeton and Harvard played a pair of 3-2 matches; in the Tiger win, Princeton got a career night from Rudnick with 32 kills and 16 digs, while Palmquist added 14 kills and hit .407. Princeton hit .324 as a team in a 3-0 home win over Dartmouth, while Quinn recorded 10 kills and hit .450 in the victory.
