MT. PLEASANT, S.C. (9/2/11) - The Princeton men's soccer team battled the College of Charleston to a 0-0 tie in the team's season opener on Friday night at the Nike / Aaron Olitsky Memorial Challenge. Princeton outchanced its opponent in draw, but neither team was able to find the back of the net in the game.
The 26th-ranked Tigers season opener came against a College of Charleston team that upset 15th-ranked South Carolina in its season opener last weekend. The Cougars entered Friday's game ranked 31st in the nation.
Princeton carried the play through much of the game, outshooting the Cougars 9-2 in the first half and generating seven corner kicks to the Cougars' four. Princeton continued to pressure in the second half and pushed the Cougars over the final 20 minutes of regulation, getting several good chances, as CofC goalie Kees Heemskerk stopped a header from Matt Sanner off a free kick and a redirect from Antoine Hoppenot.
The Cougars had two good chances very late in regulation as Tiger goalkeeper Max Gallin stopped a header from Connor Coons off a long free kick from the Cougar goalkeeper and then stopped a kick from Joey De Mare.
Despite being outchanced in regulation, the College of Charleston had more shots in overtime, but the best chance belonged to Princeton with six minutes left in the second overtime when Dylan Bowman pushed a shot just left of the Cougar goal.
Princeton outshot the Cougars 17-12 and had 12 corner kicks to CofC's five. The Cougars doubled up Princeton in fouls 16-8. Gallin made five saves for the Tigers to record a shutout, while Heemskerk made six saves. Hoppenot and Sanner each had two shots on goal in the tie.
Princeton is now 0-0-1 overall. The Tigers will take on Furman on the second day of the Nike / Aaron Olitsky Memorial Challenge on Sunday at 12 noon. Furman (1-1-1) got its first win of the season on Friday against Rutgers.
