Early Offensive Surge Headlines Princeton's 83-48 Victory at Penn
January 08, 2012 | Women's Basketball
PHILADELPHIA, Penn. - Behind a pair of first half double figure scoring runs, the Princeton women's basketball team opened up Ivy League action in dominating fashion, earning an 83-48 victory over Penn Saturday evening at The Palestra. With the win, the Tigers improve to 11-4 on the year, while dropping the Quakers to 7-4.
Princeton's offense was led by five double digit scorers, with Devona Allgood's 13 points leading the way. Nicole Hung added 11 points, while Megan Bowen, Lauren Edwards and Niveen Rasheed contributed 10 points apiece. Rasheed's 10 points would bring her career-scoring total to 900 points.
In addition to scoring a season-high 31 field goals (44.3 percent), the Tigers tallied 22 assists for a season-high. Princeton saw 12 different players dish at least one assist in the game, with Kate Miller leading the squad with a game-high three assists in 13 minutes of work.
"We had at least 12 with an assist, (which) is always a good sign," said head coach Courtney Banghart. "Defensively, giving up three field goals in the first half, I thought we were active with our scout, disciplined with our slides ... and pretty good on ball defense."
The early minutes of action saw the Tigers roll to a 6-1 lead, but Penn kept the game close heading into the 15-minute mark. The Quakers would go on to make it a 6-4 contest, before Princeton responded with a 14-0 run to take off on a double figure advantage, 20-4.
The Quakers did add a jumper at 9:08, but the Tigers continued to dominate the game, seeing contributions throughout the lineup. Blake Dietrick added four consecutive points off the bench en route to Princeton's second double digit scoring run to hold a 41-14 lead heading into halftime.
In the second half, Princeton maintained their momentum, shooting 46.9 percent from the field to close things out.
For Penn, Alyssa Baron scored 23 points, while the Quakers shot 26 percent (13-for-50) from the field.
The Tigers return to action to host their Ivy League home opener on Friday, Jan. 13 versus Cornell at 7 p.m. They close out the weekend with Columbia two days later at 2 p.m.
