Rasheed Reaches Career Milestone, Tigers Earn 10th Straight in 84-56 Win over Harvard
February 12, 2012 | Women's Basketball
On a career night for junior Niveen Rasheed, who reached the 1,000-point milestone, the Princeton women's basketball team dropped host Harvard 84-56 in Cambridge, Mass. on Saturday evening. In a battle between the first and second place teams in the Ivy League, it was the Tigers who dominated on all ends of the floor to earn their 10th consecutive victory.
Rasheed became the third Princeton player this season to reach the scoring feat, as she tallied 24 points in the game to tie a season-high. She went 10-for-16 from the field, while grabbing nine rebounds.
"I told them that they just earned that (win) by the way they practice every single day," said head coach Courtney Banghart. "It was a great team win, top to bottom, I am proud of our seniors and upperclassmen for leading the way by example and it is always fun to start the league (play) this way and we are going to keep going."
Harvard's Brogan Berry opened up the game with a long jumper, but it was the Tigers who responded with a swift 11-2 run. Headlined by back-to-back three's from Lauren Edwards and Rasheed, Princeton created an early point cushion that they would sustain for the remainder of the game.
At 13:20, Edwards added a second trey and Devona Allgood dumped in a layin to maintain the Tigers' multi-possession advantage, 16-8. Harvard would work to contain Princeton's momentum surge, as Victoria Lippert made it a 16-12 game at 9:45 off a three-pointer from the top of the key.
Despite the Crimson's effort, junior Lauren Polansky added three-pointer of her own to send Princeton on a 15-2 run to take a 31-14 lead with 3:37 remaining in the first half. The Tigers went into the locker room holding nearly a 20-point advantage, 37-18.
Rasheed headlined Princeton's 28-11 run to open second half action, scoring 14 points. She would score her 1,000th career point at the 6:25-minute mark off an assist from freshman Mariah Smith.
Senior Lauren Edwards would also score in double figures in the game, tallying 13 points, including going 3-for-4 from beyond the arc. Both Edwards and classmate Allgood, who had nine points and seven boards in the game, reached the 1,000-point milestone this fall.
"We have talented kids who are really invested in what we are doing. I'm like a mother, I'm just so proud of them," concluded Banghart of her team.
Princeton remains in the driver's seat in the Ivy League, as they improved to 17-4 overall, 7-0 Ivy. With the loss, Harvard falls to 12-9 overall, 5-2 Ivy.
The Tigers shot 55 percent (33-for-60) from the field in the game, while holding Harvard to 26.9 percent (18-for-67). Princeton held a slight rebounding margin, 42-40, converting them into 14-second chance points.
Princeton remains on the road, traveling next to Columbia (Feb. 17) and Cornell (Feb. 18) to face the pair for the second time this season.
